The Little Book of the Icelanders: 50 miniature essays on the quirks and foibles of the Icelandic people, by Alda Sigmundsdottir

After more than 20 years away, Alda Sigmundsdottir returned to her native Iceland as a foreigner. With a native person's insight yet an outsider's perspective, Alda quickly set about dissecting the national psyche of the Icelanders.

Among the fascinating subjects broached in The Little Book of the Icelanders:

The appalling driving habits of the Icelanders
Naming conventions and customs
The Icelanders’ profound fear of commitment
The irreverence of the Icelanders
Why Icelandic women are really men
How the Icelanders manage to make social interactions really complicated
The importance of the family in Icelandic society
Where to go to meet the real Icelanders (and possibly score some free financial advice)
Rituals associated with weddings, confirmations, graduations, and deaths
… and many, many more.

One chapter leads to the next, creating a continuous chain of storytelling. It feels as if you’re sitting in the author’s kitchen, enjoying a cup of coffee and conversing with her about the quirks of her countrymen, every now and then bursting out laughing. [...] I’m going to heartily recommend The Little Book of the Icelanders, both to fans of Sigmundsdttir’s blog and those unfamiliar with her work.

There aren’t many books I’d recommend reading over morning coffee but The Little Book of the Iceanders is one of them. [...] I laughed at the essays in this book, not because I was laughing at Icelanders but because I recognize much of the behaviour in myself and members of my family. It felt good. It’s not just the sanest, most impressive characteristics that we pass on and share but also some of the zaniest. As I read this book, I frequently thought, yup, I’m definitely part Icelandic.

Informative and entertaining
By Jeroen Metselaar
I usually don't read indie books, but I'm very glad I came across this one. I first heard about it just over a year ago or so (via the author's blog), but I wasn't sure if I should buy it because I didn't quite know what to expect from it. Then I found this book in a local store during my stay in Iceland, I opened it, started to read, began to smile, I raised my eyebrows - the book had convinced me after just a couple of lines! I took it home and fortunately the whole book was equally interesting. If there was something disappointing about the book, it was that it contains 'only' 50 essays. On the other hand, this this makes it a perfect book to read if you consider going to Iceland or even during your stay. And mind you, 50 is a lot and it will tell you more than you could imagine to find out about Icelanders.

The introduction of a book contains a warning that it lacks any structure. Well, the book may not be divided into sections or whatever, but it is very easy to read and once you start reading it goes unnoticed, as the style is very spontaneous and the essays follow a logical order.

The essays are just what you hope they are - informative and entertaining. The author has a great sense of humour, although some of her essays are merciless if necessary (which it sometimes is).

The book not just explains the oddities of the Icelanders, in some occassions I only recognized certain behaviour as typical Icelandic only after I read the book. I haven't recognized all the "quirks" of the Icelanders that are mentioned in the book yet - but I'm sure that will come.

During my stay in Iceland the book has been very helpful. The book has answered all of my remaining questions and has been proven useful during conversations with my fellow hostellers. Someone tells me the phone number of the Prime Minister is in the phonebook, and I tell that person that in the Icelandic phone book you can make up your own profession (you won't hear this from your tourguide!). There's a lot to say about Icelandic names and addressing - and it's all in the book. You want to know more about Icelandic family life? Or if you should take your coat to the bar? Or how to be "flott"? Read the book, there's is no way you'll regret it.

I don't want to leave the great illustrations unmentioned - they capture some of the essays in a perfectly and comically. The one about the shower police is forever impressed in my memory and I can't go to the swimming pool without thinking about it and laughing.

All in all, the book is greatly recommended if you want to get to know the Icelandic people, or if you already like them and would like to know more, or if you don't like them and would like to do something about it.

Explains Icelandic people very well
By Evan Gillespie
Outstanding book that can easily be read in a couple hours. It's funny and very informative. Icelanders behave in strange ways at times, well, should I say their culture has evolved a bit differently than those on the continent. Ever try to start a conversation and all you get is answers with no conversation back? Ever stand in Akureryi in the middle of winter and see babies outside in strollers with nobody tending to them? Ever wonder why many Icelanders have AWD Audi's even though their banking system collapsed just a few years ago? Why do Icelanders wait till the last minute to make plans?

This book explains a lot of modern culture about this crazy and totally cool country near the Arctic Circle. Icelandic people are often a paradox of post-modern liberalism and orthodox parochial beliefs. This book explains those contrasts with great accuracy.

Finally, thanks to this book, I'm no longer puzzled by some of the strange behavior I've seen throughout Iceland. Too bad we can't import parts of their culture, much of the world can learn a lot from Icelanders.

Fun, quirky book about a people and their funny ways
By Jacqueline Rodriguez
I picked up this book in Iceland a couple of weeks ago because it looked fun and interesting and the stories were short. I was not let down! Sigmundsdottir's writing has an easy, conversational tone with just the right dose of dry wit and irony. I zipped through the book because I couldn't get enough of the quirky, interesting essays and learn more about Iceland and its people. All countries have their oddities and it's a real gift to write about them without sounding condescending or sarcastic. She strikes a perfect balance. These essays give you some history of the country and you get a fun view of some of the odder parts of their ways. After this book, I immediately bought her other "Little" book so I could read more of her writing and of the Icelanders. Cannot rave enough about this book and highly recommend it to anyone who's going to Iceland or is interested in it. I've become such a fan of this writer and her island that I now follow her on Facebook and am looking forward to reading her other books.
