About the Author

Lentin Joseph

Lentin Joseph is an author, entrepreneur, electronics engineer, robotics enthusiast, machine vision expert, embedded programmer, and the founder and CEO of Qbotics Labs (http://www.qboticslabs.com) from India. He completed his bachelor's degree in electronics and communication engineering at the Federal Institute of Science and Technology (FISAT), Kerala. For his final year engineering project, he made a social robot that can interact with people. The project was a huge success and was mentioned in many forms of visual and print media. The main features of this robot were that it can communicate with people and reply intelligently and has some image processing capabilities such as face, motion, and color detection. The entire project was implemented using the Python programming language. His interest in robotics, image processing, and Python started with that project. After his graduation, for 3 years he worked in a start-up company focusing on robotics and image processing. In the meantime, he learned famous robotic software platforms such as Robot Operating System (ROS), V-REP, Actin (a robotic simulation tool), and image processing libraries such as OpenCV, OpenNI, and PCL. He also knows robot 3D designing and embedded programming on Arduino and Tiva Launchpad. After 3 years of work experience, he started a new company called Qbotics Labs, which mainly focuses on research to build up some great products in domains such as robotics and machine vision. He maintains a personal website (http://www.lentinjoseph.com) and a technology blog called technolabsz (http://www.technolabsz.com). He publishes his works on his tech blog. He was also a speaker at PyCon2013, India, on the topic Learning Robotics using Python. Lentin is the author of the book Learning Robotics Using Python (refer to http://learn-robotics.com to know more) by Packt Publishing. The book was about building an autonomous mobile robot using ROS and OpenCV. The book was launched in ICRA 2015 and was featured in the ROS blog, Robohub, OpenCV, the Python website, and various other such forums. the nephew of a hated king recently killed for his crimes

With an intricate, action-filled plot, in which mystery and twists are seamlessly woven, it was hard to put this book down. Basen, the nephew of a hated king recently killed for his crimes, has to carve out a life for himself in a foreign land full of people who despise his family. But the story doesn't dwell on him being rejected. You'll find no whining in this book. It jumps into the plot quickly: the Academy and the conflicts surrounding it. Basen has high hopes for himself, and the skills and charm for his determination to pay off, but the world he's in is brutal, setting him up for the challenge of his life.

The characters have all earned their place in the story by having their own goals and determination, making them seem very realistic. The story is ultimately about Basen, but I really got a feel for what life is like for nearly all the characters as well as a good notion of the world they live in. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Decent plot, rushed writing

The idea and plot setup is good but the author rushes by quite a bit of character and world development opportunities with very direct and shallow writing. It's almost like they're trying to hurry you past all the important details and through the plot outline. New concepts, magic elements, locations, people, etc are introduced without any setup or subtlety, usually in dialogue like "hey main character, have you heard of x brand new concept that is now really important". It's like the author has a lot of stuff in their head but is impatient to get it into yours, so they just rush through everything. There's a lot of "told but not shown". The dialogue is also very YA in terms of its simplicity where characters usually just blurt out what they are thinking or feeling. The style is ok at times, but this book should have been twice as long for the same plot to properly develop everything, and this author should invest more in world and character building, and subtlety in dialogue and presentation. Not every fantasy novel needs to be a 900 page epic, but stories need room to breathe, and this had none.

The story revolves around a boy who was exiled with his father to a kingdom where everyone hates him. Destitute and desperate the boy is finally given a chance to leave a life of hunger behind and join the academy of magic. While studying magic he makes friends while discovering a new way to use his magic, soon followed by evil forces setting in motion a plan to take over the kingdom.

I honestly can't think of one thing I hated about this book. Most books you can predict the entire story line but with this book there are so many angles and possible enemies that your not sure if if you can trust your gut feeling. They do not go into great detail about the teachings at school which was a let down for me but you will find the assassinations are interesting and the magic is still decent. I will say I don't like the use of wands with a cap in the tip to hold pellets that make magic possible.

About the Author
Dr. Turley is Brady Distinguished Professor of nutrition and the online nutrition program director at Weber State University. She is also currently head of the Department of Health and Human Performance. She received her Ph.D. degree in nutritional science from the University of Texas at Austin and held a 4-year post-doctoral research fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, Maryland. She has been actively involved in teaching, scholarship, and service at WSU for nearly 10 years. Dr. Turley's nutrition specialty areas are cancer and immunity. Her laboratory experiences centered on investigating vitamin E as an anti-cancer agent in human cancer cells and determining novel mechanisms of action for this essential nutrient. She is personally and professionally interested in nutrition and immunity, especially as it relates to food allergies and intolerances, as well as food system sustainability and the personal and environmental benefits of organic foods.

Dr. Thompson is Professor of Nutrition and the Director of the Nutrition Program at Weber State University, where she has been for 27 years. Because the Department of Nutrition is housed in the School of Health and Human Performance, Dr. Thompson has had the opportunity to reach out to young adults and share sound strategies for promoting lifelong good health. Many experiences that Dr. Thompson had during her undergraduate education at the University of California, Berkeley motivated her to pursue career opportunities in the clinical dietetics area. After completing a master's degree and a doctorate degree from the University of Arizona, and doing clinical nutrition research, she was convinced that preventive medicine and lifestyle management are among the keys to life-long health and happiness.
