About the Author
Herbert Zettl is a professor emeritus of the Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts Department at San Francisco State University, where he headed the Institute of International Media Communication and received the California State Legislature Distinguished Teaching Award and the Broadcast Education Association's Distinguished Education Service Award. Prior to joining the SFSU faculty, Zettl worked at KOVR (Stockton-Sacramento) and as a producer-director at KPIX, the CBS affiliate in San Francisco, where he participated in a variety of CBS and NBC network television productions. Because of his outstanding contributions to the television profession, he was elected to the prestigious Silver Circle of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Northern California Chapter. He also is a member of the Broadcast Legends of the NATAS, Northern California Chapter. Zettl is the author of VIDEO BASICS and TELEVISION PRODUCTION HANDBOOK, which are translated into several languages and published internationally. His numerous articles on television production and media aesthetics have appeared in major media journals worldwide. He has lectured extensively on both subjects at universities and professional broadcast institutions both nationally and internationally. In addition, Zettl developed an interactive DVD-ROM, ZETTL'S VIDEOLAB 4.0 (Cengage Learning). His previous CD-ROM version won several prominent awards, including the Macromedia People's Choice Award, the New Media Invision Gold Medal for Higher Education, and Invision Silver Medals in the categories of Continuing Education and Use of Video.

The best thing about this book is the author's sprit

The best thing about this book is the author's sprit, which shows up on almost every page. He obviously loves games and programming them, which is inspirational, and we beginner game developers need all the inspiration we can get.
In terms of its approach to teaching, the book is sort of okay as a beginner's guide. Unfortunately, it suffers from the same problems in its approach that many "beginner" programming books suffer from: it does not clearly explain *how* you make decisions. Instead, it mainly tells you what things are called and what their functions are, and what action gets which result. For me (maybe not for you, reader), this approach leaves out crucial information.
What is crucial? For instance, with this book you start programming your first example game (a "breakout" type game), with the author telling you to "first import your sprites." Next step is to "load" and name the sprite (it's a graphic of a ball). Then you "center" the sprite.
Why did we start with a sprite? Do you always have to start with a sprite? Is there some advantage to starting with a sprite? Why do we have to center it? Is that the only way you can use one?
Next, we need to "add behavior," so we "create" an "event."
Do you always need to create events after loading a sprite? Why did we create an event instead of an "object?" Objects can specify actions, so why use an event with a sprite, instead of an object? The author does not address these kinds of questions. If he went back later and talked about how he decides and prioritizes among programming options (and there are many!), but he does not seem to, unless I missed something.
These questions may seem nitpicky, but for me as a beginner, my problem wasn't with learning terms or understanding that using a set of code (or drag and drop) caused a particular thing to happen. It was when I first tried to do anything on my own--change scripts or parameters or pretty much anything--that I realized that I didn't know why the author used the particular steps he used in the particular order he used them. The authors of these books often say things like: "Play with the code. Try making changes and see what they do." My initial experience was that my "playing" made the example game fail to start executing, or to crash. And since I didn't know how the programmer made the decision to do A instead of B, I had no idea as to what I had done wrong, or what a better way would have been.
The book, as others have pointed out, has typos, but even more problematic (from my point of view) was the poor English. Examples, just from the intro:
"Today video game industry has been grown so much."
"[The market] will never get saturated until a man can imagine."
I have a rough idea of what the author is trying to say, but the language interrupts my reading to chuckle or wonder what he was trying to say. Also, it does not give one confidence when the author could not find a way to give his manuscript to someone fluent in English, who would have immediately seen the numerous instances of poor or confusing grammar, poor or inaccurate use of the vernacular, and other obvious errors.
So, if this book has really helped someone learn GM programming, great. I commend the author for his spirit and ambition, but there are other beginner's guides that do better.

After buying this book I stopped buying GR textbooks

As a non-physicist with interest for General Relativity I read a lot of popular science books about General Relativity. Unfortunately most books stop just before it is getting interesting. This book teaches you the necessary maths and the physical ideas of Special and General Relativity. I know this book is not the most complete GR textbook available, but it is certainly very readable from beginning to the end.
Professor Mould did a great job.

Review
SCWCD cannot be aimed for a 100% if you have not referred to the API documentation or the JSP and Servlet Specifications. But would you really like to go through such humongous documentation within a short span of time? I hear many no's cried out loud. But what if I say you would get a compact series of chapters and exam wise listed topics with the API information just perfect for the exam and Specification filtered out with only the exam relevant aspects, then this the book to go for. I wouldn't have been able to score a 90+ score seriously speaking without this book. Charles Lyons has prepared the book with a lot of effort of perfectly scanning up to the API level details and also packaging it with the specification information so compactly that you don't get bored reading it. He has maintained the flow so accurately that your questions will immediately be answered just as they get raised in your mind. Don't try to read through the chapters in between because the flow of the chapters will be clear only when you start it from the beginning. I assure that reading this book won't make you touch the specifications nor the API documentations at all. Even I didn't!

The best part of the book is it acts not only as a SCWCD study companion but also as a Reference book for future use since it has additional chapters for the updates that have happened in the recent past in JSP and Servlets. The one thing I would reprimand in using this book is don't try to solve tests provided at the end of each chapter since they are literally tough! You need to have your brain super charged to solve the tests since they cover an amazing depth of knowledge. But on the lines of SCWCD you won't get such difficult questions so it is better if you stick to the tests provided in the earlier 2 books. --SCWCD - The 3 Steps to Success by Nitin Pai

Charles Lyons is an independent computer consultant based near London, UK, with over five years of programming experience in a wide variety of fields and applications ranging from microprocessors and machine code to the Web, three-dimensional graphics and modelling, and client- and server-side programming using Java. Self-taught, his career began as a Web page designer, hand-coding pages in raw (X)HTML, XML and CSS. His interest quickly spread to the dynamic serving of data, using server-side programming languages like PHP, and eventually onto the Java language. Combining Java Enterprise technology with Web page design just seemed like the thing to do, and so here we are - this book is a culmination of his years of experience with the Web and Java. This book is based on his own experiences, and mostly from the process of learning from his mistakes and misconceptions!

Great Resource!

This is a complete, no nonsense guide to the material on the Sun Certified Web Component Developer (SCWCD) exam. It is well written, and easy to read.

Last week I passed the 310-084 exam with a score of 92%. This book was one of my chief resources in preparing. I bought this book on impulse (I already had the other three big books on preparation for the SCWCD). I was pleasantly surprised. The book covers all the material on the exam in a straightforward way. For example, I found the description of deploying web applications (deployment descriptor elements) very helpful.

Readers with no background in Servlets and JSP may find the material here too detailed for an introduction. These readers may be want to look at Head First Servlets and JSP: Passing the Sun Certified Web Component Developer Exam (Brain-Friendly Guides). Once they have the big picture from the "Head First" book, this would be a great second book, filling the details needed to pass the test.

Like most exam preparation books, there are questions at the end of each chapter (over 300 total). These questions make sure that help the reader make sure that they understand the material (these questions are somewhat easier than ones on the exam). Here, each answer has a complete explanation. I found it very useful to read ALL of the answers, not just the ones I missed. This helped me find things that I misunderstood, or once in a while pointed out when I got right answer for the wrong reason.

The book contains additional material (beyond the exam objectives) on methods and topics that are useful in real world web development. Also, the final section of the book contains a description of differences between J2EE 1.5 and Java EE 5. This added material is clearly labeled, so that candidates can skip it during final preparation.

Preparing for one of Sun's certification exams will never be really easy or fun (they're too hard for that), but if you have committed yourself to passing, this book is a great resource.

I passed SCWCD 5 with the score 89%. This book is definitely necessary for your certification studying. Although the content of this book is a little bit boring (very few images, full of text, not so easy to understand if you do not have so much fundamental knowledge on JSP and servlet), it is still the best book you must read if you want to pass the exam as soon as possible. I actually have another book to help prepare the test, but finally i recognized that I have to totally digest this book before I take the test.

I had just 2 weeks to pass the exam.Believe me I do have a coding experience but to pass the SCWCD 5 you still need to read the book.I read it twice n cleared exam in first attempt.Do solve the practise exam .This book puts the exact syllabus required for exam in neatly oriented fashion.
I loved this book & will 100% recommend to others.

I picked this book up because I follow technology stocks and was getting lost trying to understand the cloud and all the attendant issues surrounding it. It was most helpful but I wish the author had published " The Cloud for Really Dumb Dummies"
A shorter version would have been better for me.

Good guide, but any and all confusion is really on the game itself.

When it comes to strategy guides there is generally a prevailed (and largely unquestioned) opinion that strategy guides produced by a game's creator (e.g. Nintendo) are generally great and maintain a pretty high level of quality. Well, this was true back when I ordered the strategy guide for Super Metroid back in 1996 via mail order and it held true when I picked up the guides for Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes at a second hand store a few years ago.

Of course, in saying the above I don't want to insinuate that blind faith in any particular line of products is a good thing, but I do have some things to say about Nintendo's work on this one. As other reviews have pointed out this guide does a good job of guiding one through the game and getting all the goodies. However, I do feel the layout of the guide is a little convoluted. Now that may sound like a criticism of the guide itself yet it is not. Anyone who has ever played Metroid Prime 2 knows that the game's structure (with the presence of a "light" and "dark" world and the constant need to switch between realms to accomplish things) makes the game much more complex than the original. When you (or the author) tries to express this in writing, well, things are going to get chaotic with the presentation of the walk-through regardless. Because of this the few moments where I was confused I really didn't feel were the fault of the author as much as the result of the game itself. I'm sure some people see that as avoiding the issue or flat out giving the author a pass but I think trying to make the few, slightly confusing spots clearer probably would have resulted in even more confusion. Personally, given the way the game is set up it couldn't have been easy to write about let alone create so I don't think this is a time where being critical is appropriate.

However, the Prime 2 Echoes Player's Guide does lead me to point out the omission of a Nintendo Player's Guide for Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Prima's guide was decent enough (even though there were a few omissions within that aggravated me) but I just don't understand why Nintendo would not allow players to round out their collection of Nintendo strategy guides by not making their own guide for it. I know it seems rather trivial but as it collector it kind of bugs me. I know a Nintendo produced guide for Corruption was released in Japan but that's obviously not going to help anyone on this side of the pond. Despite my endless ramblings on the absence of a Corruption guide I think it's pretty obvious by this point that the Nintendo backed guides for the first two Prime games are definitely worth your time and money if you're stuck or just have a thing for collecting memorabilia. Additionally, I think they were pretty common as well so you probably won't have much trouble track one down or end up paying a lot for it.

Why This Guide Rocks

This is the ONLY true guide for Metroid Prime 2 Echoes. It gives you every logbook entry in the first room/opportunity you can scan it in in the walkthrough. By following the items guide in the appendix, you can get 100% of the items. Not to mention it's full of funny jokes and witty musings. For example, the introduction to the Torvus Bog section of the walkthrough says:

When you think of a bog, you might imagine friendly alligators cavorting in the sunshine, trading warm hellos with the locals. Well, that's not what bogs are like at all. Load up on that arm cannon and get ready to blast anything that moves.

The only hitch is that the Spider Guardian fight is not well detailed (although that really can't be helped; nothing can prepare you for the agony of fighting that bastard for the first time!) and his colors are red, BLUE and green, not red, orange and green. Other than that, it's perfect. Get going, Hunter.

"May the light of azarath be with you"

Samus the worlds deadliest bounty hunter does nothing but please in this one with amazing graphics for a game ahead of it's time a great story line with artistic characters and the new abilities with samus's arm cannon is just mind blowing. The concept art is beautifully and the game play is viciously addicting. This is something you must have in your game cube collection and is a great addition to an game cube collection. "May the light of azarath be with you"
