Villain or Hero??

Good Supervillains (pun intended) are hard to find, but I think we have a winner here.
After "Soon I will be Invincible" and "Memoirs of a D-List Supervillain" this is only the third book in this genre that I really liked.
Solid story with some good twists, a villains journey, loss and triumphs-the book had it all.
Found the book with KU, will proceed to buy it and will happily wait for the next book in the series.

A Page Turner with Heart

This is an origin story which throws you right in the middle of things. At first readers are thrown into a mess of action that they don't understand. Who is Dire, Why are people trying to kill her, what is going on?

These questions are slowly hinted upon as the story progresses. But more important than the backstory of the main character, is her slow development into a person of increased purpose and responsibility and her ties to the other characters around her. Slowly we learn more about this world where superpowers exist as a normal facet of life. But it becomes quickly apparent that just like the world we live in, the Teslaverse is not a paradise and there are no end to the injustices around that mix in with the good. We see these injustices (which are relevent to our world as well) from a fresh set of eyes through Dire, and it makes them that much more ugly because of this. Though the world presented here is dark, that darkness isn't all consuming or opressive feeling. There are many light hearted moments and humor sprinkled through as well, even when things are at their worst. The story has a lot of heart

Another thing I liked about this story which slowly crept up on me, was that the characters all seem to have varied dialogue. I found myself giving them different voices in my head as I read and they all felt like separate people with their own unique hangups.

I don't mean to imply that everything about this story is perfect. Though the major plotlines were tied up, the ending was a bit abrupt feeling. And I felt like the Author could have done a bit more to explain the details surrounding the cause of the big power outage. And some of the action segments seemed to go on longer than I would have liked. But any faults I found were more than made up for by how engrossing the story was.

I recommend giving this story a try.

DIRE: BORN is a great story in and of itself, with relatable characters, a well-developed world, and a gripping plot. However, its real strength is as an origin story for the protagonist, Doctor Dire - the ending feels more like a beginning, promising many more adventures to come.

If you had to read only one investment book, this one should be it!

This is the single best book for beginner and intermediate-skilled investors. I believe most non-professional investors will find this an absolute gem. The writing is clear and actually fun to read. You will learn the basics of how to evaluate companies, but Epstein includes nuances that even more advanced investors will find useful.

The book is valuable because of its appropriate coverage of 4 separate areas:
1) Teaches the reader basic accounting. For example, what do different items on a cash flow statement really mean and how are they related to the balance sheet or the income statement?
2) Once you understand basic accounting, it teaches you how to manipulate some of these numbers to get a better understanding of how well the company is doing. For example, what is the significance of inventory turnover?
3) Points you to other sources for more information and greater understanding ie: different websites and how to get bond ratings on particular companies.
4) Discusses pitfalls of analyzing financial reports. She discusses how companies manipulate numbers and how you can improve your chances of catching the culprits. She discusses 10 guilty companies.

There are many great books investors should read, but if you were only allowed one then this should be the one. Bravo Lita!

Very good book for beginners in investing

I've stayed on the sidelines for long time, watching the stocks I thought I should buy go up and down. I did not want to jump in without understanding what I was getting into. I thought the 3 Financial documents from a company (Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Cash Flow) were enough to understand a firm's performance. Boy - I couldn't have been more wrong. After reading this book, I realized how crucial it is to read through the 10-Ks and 10-Qs, and the notes to the Financial statements. That was a definite, very valuable learning for me. This book may not provide much for the experienced investor, but certainly helps you get started on the right foot if you are looking for ways to get started in stock market. Good Luck with your investing endeavors. Cheers!!

An all encompassing boating book for a great price

Since I'm a casual boater, and often forget such things as who has the right-of-way and what a particular buoy symbol means, I found this book answers all of my questions and is laid out so that I can find out what I want quickly. It is amazing how much information is packed in this pocket sized book. When the fish aren't biting, this book is a great read for learning more about such things as knot tying, navigation, weather, etc. The book caters to all levels of boating expertise, and for the price, there is no reason not to have it onboard. Well-written spanking fantasy

Pendragon’s Lash is a gem in the spanking fiction genre. It has a solid plot, hot spankings that flow out of the plot (they are not gratuitous), and sympathetic characters. The writing is excellent. If you enjoy spanking fiction, add this one to your list.

Pendragon "pen'ned by a pro

I'm not really comfortable with this 5-star rating, but I'm sticking with it because I don't have a choice. If I had one, I'd make it at least a 6, with flashing lights and bells ringing.
I stumbled across Rollin Hand's work several months ago and immediately set out on a quest to read everything he had written. His newest book, "Pendragon's Lash," belongs at the top of the list of good reads in romantic spanking fiction and is his best. That's saying something, given his reputation for exceeding his fans' expectations.
I particularly like the author's skillful plan to "blend" the stories of four futuristic visitors to an ancient Renaissance-type kingdom, where traditional gender roles are the order of the day, and failure to meet the standards results in immediate attention focused on the seat of the problem. Since Pendragon's "guests" hail from a different time and place, with very different concepts of gender equality and discipline, there is bound to be a steep learning curve in play.
Rollin Hand makes it all work so that fans looking for spanking action will light up with glee, pure romance fans will fall in love with his characters and their star-crossed adventures, and fans of good fiction who simply delight in a great story, well written, will hope he writes a sequel very soon.
Buy it now, so you can look forward to dipping into it once the holidays are over and the gloom of January sets in. You'll be very glad you did.

Fantastic!

I highly recommend this book. The plotting was exceptionally well done and intriguing. The characters were believable and easy to identify with. The setting was imaginative and interesting. Rollin's writing skills are solid---active, descriptive prose that do not trip over themselves.
And between all these great attributes, Rollin Hand managed to deliver smoking hot romance with a healthy dose of spankings in a variety of scenarios----ALL of which enhanced this tail, er, tale.

Bravo. Well done. I will definitely be reading more of Rollin's work.

Pushing Up Daisies a perennial favorite

Has it really been two years since I reviewed The Big Dirt Nap? I went back and reread Pushing Up Daisies, Rosemary Harris's debut, and it's as fresh and fun as ever. And what a delight to watch one of the very best contemporary cozy mystery series going take root and grow. The Paula Holliday series stands alone well, but why not see where it began....

well plotted amateur sleuth

After the buyout of the production company she worked for, Paula Holliday moved from the Big Apple to Springfield, Connecticut where she opened up a landscaping business, PH Factors, Garden Solutions. When Dorothy Peacock died, she left her estate Helepin to the Historical Society, but the grounds desperately need a good landscaper. Paula applies and gets the contract.

Her euphoria turns to horror when she digs up a box containing a mummified baby inside. Unable to forget or ignore her grisly find, Paula asks questions of those locals who lived in the area for decades in an attempt to identify either parent of the unfortunate child. She upsets someone who sends her a threatening email to back off or else, and someone knocks her out when she was in a deserted area. Paula learns that a young female Mexican who worked nearby decades ago mysteriously vanished although most people assumed she went home. The newbie ponders whether the interred baby and this woman are related like a mother and child. When another landscaper is murdered, Paula knows she has to stay involved even though she risks her life by still snooping.

This "Dirt-y Business" mystery by first time writer Rosemary Harris is an exciting well plotted (pun intended) amateur sleuth due to a quirky heroine and an eccentric Connecticut support cast. There are two mysteries that Paula feels must connect and has her theory how, but struggles to affirm her supposition. The novel also contains gardening tips and flora lore that enhance the appeal especially for fans of China Bayles.
