About the Author

Richard C. Dorf is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Davis. Known as an instructor who is highly concerned with the discipline of electrical engineering and its application to social and economic needs, Professor Dorf has written and edited several successful engineering textbooks and handbooks, including the best selling Engineering Handbook, second edition and the third edition of the Electrical Engineering Handbook. Professor Dorf is also co author of Technology Ventures, a leading textbook on technology entrepreneurship. Professor Dorf is a Fellow of the IEEE and a Fellow of the ASEE. He is active in the fields of control system design and robotics. Dr. Dorf holds a patent for the PIDA controller.

Robert H. Bishop is the OPUS Dean of Engineering at Marquette University and is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Prior to coming to Marquette University, he was a Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at The University of Texas at Austin for 20 years where he held the Joe J. King Professorship and was a Distinguished Teaching Professor. Professor Bishop started his engineering career as a member of the technical staff at the MIT Charles Stark Draper Laboratory. He authors the well-known textbook for teaching graphical programming entitled Learning with LabVIEW and is also the editor-in-chief of the Mechatronics Handbook. A talented educator, Professor Bishop has been recognized with numerous teaching awards including the coveted Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems Award for Excellence in Engineering Teaching. He also received the John Leland Atwood Award by the American Society of Engineering Educators (ASEE) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) that is given periodically to “a leader who has made lasting and significant contributions to aerospace engineering education.” He is a Fellow of the AIAA, a Fellow of the American Astronautical Society (AAS), and active in ASEE and in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Depends on what you are looking for

If you want to learn about Modern Control Systems the first time around then use a book written by Ogata, Kuo or Nise. These three authors have some of the best books on this subject that you will ever see.
As for this book
GOOD:
The Matlab part of the book I would give 4 stars. It is pretty good and lets you get acquainted with the control toolbox. There are a wide variety of problems in the book and it has a lot of design problems for the reader. Problems include exercise problems, regular problems (beats me why he didn't put them together), advance problems and Matlab Problems. If you already know the subject then it could possibly be a good design book.
BAD:
Worst book I have ever read. This book offers some of the worst explanations I have ever seen in a book. It is nearly impossible to do the problems with the information given to you. Reading the book is like solving an exercise problem in itself. A lot of times the math is skipped so you have no idea how he got to the answer. While other books happened to spend 4 pages on a topic, Dorf managed to compress it into a useless paragraph. Also, Dorf expects you to clairvoyantly know what a definition is. When reading through a chapter he talks about something without telling you what it is. Somehow he expected you to know that at the end of the chapter, AFTER you've read everything he'll give you a definition list. Very few exercise problems have answers to them so if you are doing something wrong then you will not know. If you are looking for self-study from this book then start crying now because you will throw over 100 bucks in the garbage.
The most definitively annoying thing about the book is how it references other books. Dorf commonly gives you a sentence on a topic and then references the sentence to another book. Those sentences are meaningless and explain nothing, which gave me the impression that I was supposed to go to one of the hundreds of referenced books to learn what he was talking about.
IN SUM:
The only people who will like this book are the ones who already know the subject. I found that after I read Modern Control Engineering by Ogata and understood the subject, I appreciated a FEW of the examples Dorf gave, even though I could find a slew of books that could cover that material better. If you are a teacher looking to make this your class's book, reconsider because your students will not learn the subject.

Unnecessarily Long

Currently taking a controls course, using this book... It's fairly obvious that this is the 12th edition; so much material has been added over the years. About half of each chapter is redundant examples. I'd recommend Principles and Practices of Automatic Process Control by Smith (which I used the ChemE version of controls) over this book. I hate how authors and publishers add a little more in each edition to encourage readers to buy the new one. This 1000+ page book would be about 400-500 if the extremely unnecessary bits were deleted.
EDIT: Despite being the 12th edition, I've come across typos that make the already difficult material almost impossible to understand. If you are a professor teaching a controls class, please look for another book.

A second look

The review I wrote previously was written from the standpoint of someone using this book as a chief reference for the course. After taking a second look at the book, a few things stand out:

There are many worked examples to help explain the fundamental concepts that are explained in the text.

The book contains many problems for students to work, including more advanced or computer based problems.

The incorporation of Matlab methods in this book provides a background very helpful to engineering students, as not many other books contain computer skills that should be taught along with the course.

Fundamentals are taught and are capable of understanding with proper patience.

That said, here are the problems I found with this book:

This is a 10th edition textbook, and by now the index should be much more thorough, and should especially reference important formulas.

Important equations are not typset in a way that makes them entirely obvious. Other books place boxes or highlight or use different colored text to emphasize important equations and formulas. Some equations in this book are set out with boxes, but the selection of what is boxed doesn't necessarily reflect what students might use, such as the angle critereon (equation 7.17)

Examples are placed in the middle of method steps, without a clear delineation. Examples have a clear header to designate where they begin, but the end of the examples tends to get lost, as the only clear marker for the end of an example is a shaded square at the end of a block of text. Other books tend to shade the entire background of an example, and give the examples more border space so that methods can be followed without necessarily having to read through examples.

Content wise, this book is valuable, but the organization and index should be much more refined for a 10th edition textbook.
