About the Author

Dr. Michael Lawrence Faulkner is the author of six books. He is a professor at the Keller Graduate School of Management at DeVry University. He is a former U.S. Marine who spent 30 years in a variety of leadership and executive management positions with Fortune 500 firms and major nonprofit trade associations. He also helped his family run the family business before beginning his second career in academics. Michael is a member of MENSA, a Rotary International Fellow, and a Keller Master Teacher Award recipient. He holds a Silver Certification by the Toastmaster’s International. In addition to his Ph.D., Michael has earned two Master’s degrees: one from NYU and an MBA from NYIT.

Michelle Faulkner-Lunsford is a 2001 graduate of Middle Tennessee State University where she majored in English and minored in Writing. Mrs. Lunsford spent 10+ years in the world of advertising and marketing as an Account Manager and Director of Marketing and New Business Development, managing multimillion dollar accounts from male-enhancement medications to beer ads. In 2011, Michelle left the corporate world for the opportunity to raise her daughter.

More than you would think

I bought this book for some help for my resume. Wow, just when you think you have very word possible. you find a book that expands on that and more. I would recommend this book to anyone who may need their vocabulary expanded without mind wrecked by needless explorations of thesaurus.

Worthless. I returned it.

I gave it 1 star only because there isn't an option for zero. Cumbersome. Confusing. Obscure words and very poor examples. I am a bit of a «wordie» and thought this would be a good addition to my library. It took very little time to realize how useless this book is.

One of the most uplifting and knowledgable books referring to Mao and the Sino-Soviet Era

I can personally recommend this book to anyone studying the subject. After reading the text, the authors presented a feeling of excitement for the reader, giving him/her a chance to live in the times discussed in the book. One thing that I can say is that this book should be looked at as the greatest piece of writing in the subject during the reign of Mao and the conflicts and agendas presented during the Sino-Soviet Era. Once again, I end this review by giving others my thoughts and opinions, which I feel the workshould be noted on a mastery level of the Sino-Soviet Era.

Learning the times of Mao Zedong and the conflict/partnership that came to be between the Russians and Chinese is perfectly discussed in this academic scholarly book featuring authors Shen and Xia. As part of the Harvard Cold War Studies Book Series, after reading the literal meanings of that respective era, one can say that this is the grand text in relation to the subject of Russian-Chinese relations. Recommend this book to anyone studying this subject as it is noted on a top scholarly level, I rate this text an easy five stars.

Watch out! All the five star reviews about this book look dubious to me

All the reviews say basically the same thing: The book is a must buy. They all start with the authors name in the first sentence. They don't really say anything about the book's content in detail. Also, most of the reviews have been submitted within a couple of days. Before and after were hardly any reviews. It looks fishy to me.

Anyone in an IT (manager, engineer, CEO) or an educational career would benefit from reading this book if they want to understand computer security and learn how to implement security measures. Vacca's book covers PKI (Public Key Infrastructures) design, architecture AND implementation. It is the latter part of the book that attracted me most. Vacca goes deeply into costs, performance, and schedules of implementing the right PKI structure for your needs.
You get a good overview of the state of the PKI field today before getting into adopting and deploying the right PKI structure for your business. Vacca walks you through the steps of certificate management - obtaining, using, and removing digital certificates. Many supporting contributors have lent their expertise to assorted chapters, and the book is a real smooth read. Vacca has the ability to easily explain complex subjects while not detracting from the depth of topic coverage, and there are ample tables and flowcharts to support any discussion.
I would heartily recommend this book.

NOT THE SAME AS THE PRINT VERSION

It says that this is exactly like the print version, but it is not! I spent several hours contacting various people trying to figure out why some pages are blacked out. Finally I talked to the publishers, who were actually helpful, unlike the amazon help line. I found out that they do not have the copy writes to publish some of the pages so they are just blacked out, and there is no way to get them.
THIS IS NOT A PRINT REPLICA. It does not have all the content.

A good, understandable read (Rented, not bought)

This was a required textbook for a class and I opted to rent this book instead of purchasing (So Much Cheaper!). Overall, I liked the textbook since it is relatively easy to follow and contains lots of real-world scenario examples. The material was also fairly current (within a few years).

In 1964, Nina Simone sat at a piano in New York's Carnegie Hall to play what she called a "show tune." But her confrontational style was not the only path taken by black women entertainers.

In How It Feels to Be Free, Ruth Feldstein examines celebrated black women performers, illuminating the risks they took, their roles at home and abroad, and the ways that they raised the issue of gender amid their demands for black liberation. Feldstein focuses on six women who made names for themselves in the music, film, and television industries: Simone, Lena Horne, Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln, Diahann Carroll, and Cicely Tyson. These women did not simply mirror black activism; their performances helped constitute the era's political history. Makeba connected America's struggle for civil rights to the fight against apartheid in South Africa, while Simone sparked high-profile controversy with her incendiary lyrics. Yet Feldstein finds nuance in their careers. In 1968, Hollywood cast the outspoken Lincoln as a maid to a white family in For Love of Ivy, adding a layer of complication to the film. That same year, Diahann Carroll took on the starring role in the television series Julia. Was Julia a landmark for casting a black woman or for treating her race as unimportant? The answer is not clear-cut. Yet audiences gave broader meaning to what sometimes seemed to be apolitical performances.

How It Feels to Be Free demonstrates that entertainment was not always just entertainment and that "We Shall Overcome" was not the only soundtrack to the civil rights movement. By putting black women performances at center stage, Feldstein sheds light on the meanings of black womanhood in a revolutionary time.

Exquisite book

I'm fascinated by the ways that popular culture plays a role in politics, and Feldstein's book does an excellent job of showing how black female performers were making civil rights real in their music, TV roles, and movies. Each chapter takes on a different performer (or two), and they are all fascinating and surprising, taking up figures like Lena Horne, Cicely Tyson, and Abbey Lincoln, and showing how the choices they made mattered to the ideas of equality, black pride, and feminist consciousness. But my favorite chapters are the ones on the South African singer Miram Makeba and the glorious songstress Nina Simone. Makeba's story was new to me: she was first presented in the 1950s as an exotic bit of Africa by her mentor Harry Belafonte; she later became far more political and even married Stokely Carmichael. And Simone .... wow. The discussion of her as a singer and a political activist -- I loved hearing more about the song "Mississippi Goddam." Overall, this is a great book, that people should have on their go-to list to give to friends or family.

Freedom Feels Right.

The six Black women who where the subjects of Ruth Feldstein's book "How It Feels to Be Free:Black Women In The Civil Rights Movement basically answered the question this way: it feels liberated, pretty, smart, large and in-charge, bossy, talented and loved.

Another book I got for class

that ended up being a great read, I purchased it for my kindle but I wish I would have gotten a hardcopy. Such an interesting book if you are interested in the civil rights movement circa 1950-1978
