En esta novela, los agentes del servicio secreto Tommy y Tuppence Bersford ya tiene mas setenta a�os, y cuando est�n apunto del retiro tienen que resolver un antiguo misterio que habita en la casa a la que se acaban de mudar.

Este libro resulta un poco decepcionante, el misterio tarda much�simo en despegar, Christie nos enreda en un mont�n de reuniones de ancianos, excursiones de ni�os, reparaciones domesticas, di�logos extremadamente barrocos, y suposiciones vac�as que al final solo sirven para enredar al lector. El tema de la vejez como punto critico de la obra, el pasado, la fama que la pareja protagonista ha ganado en su extensa carrera no terminan de encajar. Despu�s de la segunda mitad del libro es cuando empieza en verdad a avanzar la trama, metiendo mas en al lector en la historia, pero los villanos que aparecen de repente son descubiertos de manera precipitada sin dar l�gica al relato, llegando a un cl�max mas bien desinflado y a un desenlace que no emociona ni sorprende, dejando al lector con mas dudas que las que tenia al comenzar el libro.

Es triste que una saga de una pareja de esp�as tan divertido como Tommy y Tuppence cierre de una manera tan desabrida y aburrida como esta.

Difficult to Use

I thought it was just me, but after reading so many other reviews it seems that many others are having the same problem. Unlike in traditional text-books where the examples and the foundational teaching are separate, this book mixes them so you don't know where the example ends and the text-material starts.

I'm doing the End of Chapter Discussion Questions, have read the chapter all the way through and still haven't found the answer to the FIRST QUESTION!

After reading some of the positive reviews, it could be that this book is more geared towards Analysis, but I am taking a MPC POLICY class.

The reviews of the last few books I have had at my Uni have all been bad and I am beginning to suspect corruption within the school's book selection process.

Hard to understand

I've worked in Supply Chain logistics for about 12 years and I found this book to be poorly written. The information on each of the chapters subjects lack in-depth explanation and can leave the reader confused. It seems if they had just copy and pasted from Wikipedia instead of writing a book to explain the concepts to those without any experience in Supply Chain. Without that background in Supply Chain I would think the reader would struggle to understand the material.

Amor, venganza, intriga,odio y de todo un poco.
Es la primera vez que leo un libro en el que se hable tan de serca el tema de la iglesia,de la santa inquisici�n (que de santa no tenia nada) y todo por lo que pasaban las personas homosexuales.
Primera vez que leo a este escritor y me gusto mucho al cual seguir� leyendo sin duda alguna.

Buscando algo para leer, encontr� este libro por kindle unlimited. No conoc�a al autor, no hab�a le�do nada de �l anteriormente, asi que solo puedo decir WOW. Esta novela es... no tengo palabras para describirla. El contexto en el que desarrolla es complicado y oscuro (me cost� decirme porque habla de la inquisici�n espa�ola, tema que me da escalosfrios) pero el autor sabiamente supo explicarnos el contexto, sin perder en ningun momento de vista lo mas importante: La relacion de Trist�n con Gabriel. Me enamor� de Trist�n, sin remedio. Su gradual tranformaci�n conforme avanza su relaci�n, en como va "floreciendo" a abriendose a gabriel, esos momentos tiernos y ardientes que conforme uno avanza, se hacen mas y mas er�ticos. El autor te lleva sin soltarte hasta el climax, donde puedes sentir la desesperacion de trist�n por no perder a su amado, y un final que borra todo momento angustioso que el autor te hace pasar. Los personajes estan bien perfilados, la descripcion de la epoca y los lugares de ubica muy bien, no aburre ni pierde al lector con exceso de tecnicismos. Igualmente los personajes secundarios aportan, y algunos te dan sorpresas agradables, y otros no tanto. Recomiendo ampliamente a este autor. en definitiva, una joya que merece estar en la colecci�n de todo amante de la lectura homo�rotica.

The audacious and patchwork concept underlying this story (the richer you are the less you are forced to consume; the greatest poverty is involved with the aggregation of goods) was Horace Gold’s and according to Pohl he had offered it to almost all of his regular contributors, asking for a story centered on the idea. The idea lacks all credibility, everyone (including Pohl) told him and everyone refused to write something so patently unbelievable until, according to Pohl, Horace browbeat him into an attempt and Pohl decided that it was less trouble to deliver something than continue to resist. To his utter shock, the story was received by Gold and his readership with great glee, was among the most popular GALAXY ever published (or Pohl) and one of the most anthologized. Whether this demonstrated the audacity and scope of Gold’s unreason or whether it confirmed Gold’s genius (or both) Pohl was utterly unable to decide. The sculpted consumer-obsessed society was used again by Pohl a few years later in the novelette THE MAN WHO ATE THE WORLD which was far more credible (consumption-obsession as a kind of personal tyranny) and, perhaps for that very reason, much less successful, barely remembered.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Frederik Pohl (b. 1919) has been at the center of science fiction for three-quarters of a century. As an editor at GALAXY, Gold’s successor for a decade, as the editor a decade earlier of ASTONISHING and other competitors of ASTOUNDING, as the science fiction editor at Bantam Books and as an editor of the first original anthology series, STAR SCIENCE FICTION, Pohl has been perhaps more influential than any editor other than John W. Campbell. His novels and short stories alone or in collaboration since THE SPACE MERCHANTS have been at the cutting edge of the field; GATEWAY and MAN PLUS each won both Nebula and Hugo in successive years. Writers he first published or made prominent as an editor include R.A. Lafferty, Cordwainer Smith and Joanna Russ. His mainstream novel, THE YEARS OF THE CITY is probably his finest. He is a Grandmaster of the Science Fiction Writers of America. His most recent novel, published in 2011 is ALL THE LIVES HE LED.

Social and science and economics

I read this first decades ago, and loved it for the plot itself.
Reading it again, I understand that I was not just enjoying the plot, but getting a deep but subtle commentary on science, economics, interpersonal relationships, and politics hidden away inside a fun story. I know well-crafted stores influenced me subtly in many ways in later life, and I thank Pohl for being the master writer and laying the groundwork for critical thinking in me.
You will have a good deal of fun with this, and face questions that we still haven't answered.

The Midas Plague

There are 6 introductory sections for one novelette! And they are pretty bad, too -- cold, incomplete, and dull. As far as I can tell, all those introductions are good for nothing for but padding the page count.

The story is marred by more than a dozen OCR transcription errors and one bad duplicate passage. I know the budget must be tight, but come on.

The jacket is a nice touch, though.

The story itself is a wacky "what if". As another reviewer posted, it depicts people behaving irrationally in an irrational world. That makes it more of a satire rather than a serious work. Pohl manages to pull off the satire long enough to carry the story.

An old friend

I remembered reading this long ago and went looking for it. The chance to put it on my Kindle and have it to read anytime thrilled me. I'll be gathering in more of this Author as well - a golden-ager and one I always appreciated.

It tells a good story, the roll reversal between wealthy and poor was why I remembered it in the first place; it is more than mere entertainment.
