About the Author
David C. Van Aken is a Professor of Materials Science & Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Missouri. Dr Van Aken is a licensed Professional Engineer in the states of Missouri and Illinois. He is the author of more than 70 technical articles. He joined the UMR faculty in 1993 after having taught at the University of Michigan for seven years. David has been the recipient of 12 awards for teaching excellence, 4 Missouri S&T faculty excellence awards and one Missouri S&T Alumni Association outstanding advising award. In 2006 Dr Van Aken was designated a Dean's Teaching Scholar. David began his engineering career in 1978 at Caterpillar, Inc. as a materials engineer and then returned in 1982 to the University of Illinois for his Ph.D. graduate studies. Dr Van Aken is the recipient of the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award and the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award. Van Aken's research interests include the physical metallurgy of ferrous alloys, experimental and theoretical aspects of phase transformations and the mechanical behavior of structural materials.

William Hosford is a Professor Emeritus of Materials Science and Engineering at University of Michigan. He is the author of more than 80 technical articles and a number of books including the leading selling Metal Forming: Mechanics and Metallurgy, 3rd edition (with R. M. Caddell) (Cambridge, 2007); Materials Science; An Intermediate Text (Cambridge, 2006); Mechanical Behavior of Materials (Cambridge, 2005); Mechanics of Crystals and Textured Polycrystals (Oxford University Press 1993); Mechanical Metallurgy (CRC Press 2005) and Materials for Engineers (Cambridge, 2008), an undergraduate textbook. Professor Hosford's research interests include explorations into the quantitative relationship between anisotropic yielding behavior and crystallographic texture, sheet metal forming and the dependence of sheet formability on plastic anisotropy and the formation of deformation textures in bcc metals, as well as the spheroidization of medium carbon steels.

This is a powerful book for anyone who is responsible for forming their corporate communication strategy, developing a marketing message, building a brand or promoting just about anything in business. This little book is jam-packed with powerful ideas and simple, yet profound, strategies to help the reader understand the complex business of communication.

I especially loved Holston's imaginative story approach to illustrate his key points. Bob and Barb give real insight into the daunting task of helping an organization really understand who they are, how they want to be perceived and ultimately what they want people to think, feel and see when it comes to their company, product or service.

For me, building a software company, I could really relate to many of the challenges that the company, TTI, was facing and how having someone like Bob and Barb working with you to really understand your company's goals and ultimately your customer's needs would be a huge advantage.

After reading this book, I feel better equipped to understand how to maximize my value of working with someone like Bob and Barb and less intimidated because I know have some perspective from both sides of the desk. This definitely opened my eyes on quite a few levels and has me actually excited to start putting what I have learned in this book to work for me and my company.

THE ARCH OF CONSTANTINE by Iain Ferris (author of HATE AND WAR The Column of Marcus Aurelius) is an outstanding and comprehensive study of what is considered to be the last and arguably the most magnificent of Rome's triumphal monuments. The first chapter is a fine overview of the political and personal background to the life and times of Constantine and its potential relevance as to what appears on the Arch and where. Here, as is the case throughout the book, the well written text is buttressed by an abundance of detailed and clear photographs in b&w which clarify and support what is being expounded. Additional chapters deal with the "good" emperors - Trajan, Hadrian, and Marcus Aurelius - and what their monuments contributed to the A of C; an in depth discussion of the various sculptural programs intentionally "inspired by the divine"; the specter and building legacy of Maxentius in Rome ("The Ghost in the Machine"); "Collage and Memory" discusses the use of "spolia" on the Arch and the reasons for the specifics of it. The subject is also treated with reference to the new capital - Constantinople (Istanbul) - of the Eastern Roman Empire and its relationship to the acquisition of "holy Christian" relics. A final chapter ("A Metaphor for Modernity") not only deals with the artistic legacy of the Arch but contains an excellent discussion and critique of Bernard Berenson's "misguided" 1954 analysis of the A of C. An Appendix, 39 color photographs, and a superb and up to date very extensive bibliography (along with notes) completes the book.

It is also the opinion of this reviewer that the Arch of Constantine should rightfully be considered both the last Pagan monument and first Christian monument above ground in the city of Rome.

Thus one may also view Vol. II as a followup of the author's 1996 book ``Neuro-Dynamic Programming" (coauthored with John Tsitsiklis). The present book focuses to a great extent
on new research that became available after 1996. On the other hand, the textbook style of the book has been preserved, and some material has been explained at an intuitive or informal level, while referring to the journal literature or the Neuro-Dynamic Programming book for a more mathematical treatment.

As the book's focus shifted, increased emphasis was placed on new or recent research in approximate DP and simulation-based methods, as well as on asynchronous iterative methods, in view of the central role of simulation, which is by nature asynchronous. A lot of this material is an outgrowth of research conducted in the six years since the previous edition. Some of the highlights, in the order appearing in the book, are:
(a) A broad spectrum of simulation-based, approximate value iteration, policy iteration, and Q-learning methods based on projected equations and aggregation.
(b) New policy iteration and Q-learning algorithms for stochastic shortest path problems with improper policies.
(c) Reliable Q-learning algorithms for optimistic policy iteration.
(d) New simulation techniques for multistep methods, such as geometric and free-form sampling, based on generalized weighted Bellman equations.
(e) Computational methods for generalized/abstract discounted DP, including convergence analysis and error bounds for approximations.
(f) Monte Carlo linear algebra methods, which extend the approximate DP methodology to broadly applicable problems involving large-scale regression and systems of linear equations.

The book was developed through teaching graduate courses at M.I.T.

An excellent book

I thought I had reviewed this book, but perhaps it was done for an earlier edition. Anyway, this is one of my favorite books on Dynamic Programming (DP). Especially if you are interested in stochastic Markov Decision Processes (MDPs), this is the book for you! And this volume covers details of the stochastic MDP. (The other (first) volume covers for the most part linear systems, finite horizon, deterministic control, HJB equations etc.)

Topics covered in great detail in this volume include:

* Infinite horizon discounted reward (cost) MDPs
* Infinite horizon average reward (cost) MDPs
* The stochastic shortest path problem (SSPP) of which the finite horizon undiscounted MDP is a special case
* Continuous-time MDPs and semi-MDPs (SMDPs)

Plus, the new edition contains significant material on Approximate DP (ADP), including material on Q-Learning, approximate policy iteration, the projected Bellman equation methods, function approximation etc. The book does a very solid job of presenting the theory underlying MDPs, which is essential for those who want to use these ideas in their own work or take off from here with their own ideas.

Mathematical proofs of existence of optimal solutions for many problems as well convergence proofs of many algorithms are presented. The notation is user friendly and proofs are easy to understand. If you are working in dynamic programming/reinforcement learning, the book will be of great value to you. Overall, it provides a comprehensive and up-to-date description of this rapidly evolving field.

This is an excellent textbook on dynamic programming written by a master expositor. Between this and the first volume, there is an amazing diversity of ideas presented in a unified and accessible manner. This new edition offers an expanded treatment of approximate dynamic programming, synthesizing a substantial and growing research literature on the topic.

Russell Hoye is an Associate Professor in Sport Management, School of Management at La Trobe University, Australia. His main research areas focus on the governance of sports organizations, the impacts of public policy on sport and the engagement of volunteers in sport. His most recent books include Sport Management: Principles and Applications (2009), Sport and Social Capital (2008) and Sport Governance (2007) with Elsevier.

Matthew Nicholson is an Associate Professor in Sport Management in the School of Human Movement and Sport Sciences at the University of Ballarat, Australia. His research and teaching interests focus on sport policy and development, the contribution of sport to social capital and the relationship between sport and the media. His most recent books include Sport Management: Principles and Applications (2009), Sport and Social Capital (2008) and Sport and the Media: Managing the Nexus (2007).

Barrie Houlihan is Professor of Sport Policy in the Institute of Sport and Leisure Policy, School of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences, Loughborough University. He has written widely on many aspects of sport policy including doping, sport development, theorising the sport policy process and sport and young people. His most recent books include Sport Policy: A Comparative Analysis of Stability and Change (2007) and Comparative Elite Sport Development: Systems, Structures and Public Policy (2008) with Elsevier.
