the hybrid approach: F# via C# interop
By Andre M. Van Meulebrouck
I like this book because it takes the only approach that I think will work towards gaining more industry acceptance of F#: interop with C#.

Don Syme really puts on his marketing hat (and aptly sets the stage for this book) in his brilliant forward by citing an incontrovertible case for F# over C# due to reliability: no more null exceptions! Hear hear!

Rather than see F# repeat all the man-hours of work that went into creating the designers and project types that C# has (and trying to precisely match all their behaviors and quirks); it makes more sense to leverage C# for those things. That is the approach advocated by this book. There are a lot of things you can do in F# that are ugly, infeasible, or ill-advised in C#; but F# needs C# interop because F# is far from self-sufficient.

The book author states (up front) that this book is for experienced C# developers who understand .NET development and OOP concepts. If you don't currently fit those requirements, get them; then get this book. (I've said it before, and I'll say it again: one needs to be better at C# than the typical professional C# developer, as a prerequisite, before you even begin to think about specializing in F#.)

If you are a C# developer and you have (or think you have) no interest in F#, I would still highly recommend taking a look at this book. (Here's another of my maxims: I think one needs to learn Haskell to really understand F#, and one needs to learn F# to really understand C#.) You will learn C# much more deeply from reading this book. (In particular you will really understand C#'s limitations and what functional programming has to offer.)

The OOP discussion in this book is superb: it shows how F# not only allows OOP, but does it far better than C# (and other OOP languages).

The discussion of design patterns is important; many F# books and materials don't have similar coverage.

While this book is very applied, C# friendly, and .Net friendly; C# programmers will also want to look at Real-World Functional Programming: With Examples in F# and C# (Petricek et al.) for its unique insights into C# and F#. (Note: Petricek is also a coauthor in Functional Programming in F#; which is not yet released.)

Conclusion: if you want to use F# for any type of realistic development (i.e. beyond toy problems and experimentation), this book is highly recommended.

Good for learning to develop C# in F#
By David A. McGinnis
I first saw this book when wanting to expand my horizons and try out F#. Coming from my current job where I use C# constantly, this book made sense to get. What I realized after reading through it, however, is that this isn't the right way to learn F#.

The book spends the first third of the time talking about the equivalent code between the two languages. By the end of this section, you can write F# code, but it is going to be C# in F#, not F# code. Meanwhile, you are constantly being shown things and told "this is something we will talk about later", since it doesn't have a direct corollary in C#.

Once you get to the F# specific sections, you breathe a sigh of relief, but even then, you aren't given any indication on how the new features could be used, or how they change the way you develop, so maybe you can use it when doing development, but you are still essentially developing C# in F#.

I'll admit that I stopped reading this book mid way though the second part, when he starts getting into topics that seem very esoteric (such as creating your own data provider), where I am not sure I have a need for that functionality. Meanwhile, I'm going to have to get a new resource to figure out just what F# code is supposed to look like, and what developing in F# actually means.

Unpleasant and Frustrating
By B Smith
F# is a great language, and desperately needs higher quality materials. Even if you tolerate the occasional error in the tables and code, the written explanations are barely passable English. I doubt this book was proofread or edited by a professional.

Painting as an Art, by Richard Wollheim

In Painting as an Art, which began as the 1984 Andrew Mellon Lectures at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., philosopher Richard Wollheim transcended the boundaries and habits of both philosophy and art history to produce a large, encompassing vision of viewing art. Wollheim had three great passions--philosophy, psychology, art--and his work attempted to unify them into a theory of the experience of art. He believed that unlocking the meaning of a painting involved retrieving, almost reenacting, the creative activity that produced it.

In order to fully appreciate a work of art, Wollheim argued, critics must bring to the understanding of a work of art a much richer conception of human psychology than they have in the past: "Many [critics] . . . make do with a psychology that, if they tried to live their lives by it, would leave them at the end of an ordinary day without lovers, friends, or any insight into how this came about." Many reviewers have remarked on the insightfulness of the book's final chapter, in which Wollheim contended that certain paintings by Titian, Bellini, de Kooning, and others represent the painters' attempts to project fantasies about the human body onto the canvas.

Reviewing the book in the Los Angeles Times, Daniel A. Herwitz asserted that Wollheim had "done no less than recover for psychology its obvious and irresistible place in the explanation of what is most profound and subtle about paintings."

From Publishers Weekly
Wollheim notes that De Kooning crammed his pictures with the infantile experiences of sucking, touching, biting, excreting and swallowing. The expressionist's violent paintings are about the body as locus of sensation and emotion; they remind us that, as children, we felt threatened by our own natural bodily functions. Penetrating insights like these pepper the difficult lectures presented here along with some 400 illustrations. Wollheim, a philosopher of esthetics, offers a psychological theory of how pictures transmit meaning: artists act as agents, inducing in the mind of the spectator the mental states that compel them to paint. The author's favorites include Manet, Picasso, Titian, Bellini, Ingres, Poussin. These essays will help readers identify the unrepresented "internal spectator" lurking in some pictures; with other paintings, one discovers how the artist wanted the external spectator to feel. Wollheim delivered this set of lectures at the National Gallery of Art.

From Library Journal
Originally presented as the A. W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts for 1984, this collection of essays focuses on Wollheim's psychological account of painting, in which he argues that two elements are important: the artist's mental state, which causes him to paint what he does, and the experiences the painting evokes in the viewer. Aesthetic theories centering on meaning as a core element in determining aesthetic value have had rough going because of the difficulty in knowing or interpreting what an artist "means" or "intends." Yet Wollheim presents his case well. This is substantial, at times difficult, reading, but a definite contribution to the philosophy of art. Highly recommended. Terry Skeats, Bishop's Univ. Lib., Lennoxville, Quebec

Review
"There are books aplenty on painting and art, but this is the first to explain seriously what makes painting an art, and it is our good luck to have it from a notable philosopher who is also on an intimate footing with the tradition of Western painting and who knows how to stand in front of a painting and spin tales that sparkle with truth. . . . Mr. Wollheim's interpretations are bold, revisionary and cogent. Only a philosopher of his rare gifts, and a connoisseur with his command of the art-historical tradition, could possibly have the confidence to bring off his feat of virtuoso interpretation."--Flint Schier, New York Times Book Review

"It is one of the achievements of Richard Wollheim's superb book that it offers an extremely subtle sense of the mind's functioning, while providing a theory of critical relevance: it shows how psychological and cultural factors enter a painting's content, and how arguments on relevance can be conducted in difficult cases."--Michael Podro, The Times Literary Supplement

Classic must read about painting
By P. Nagy
Painting as Art by Richard Wollheim (Princeton University Press) provides the first sustained discussion of the complex of perceptions, design, pigments, biography, social history, and lived experience that becomes the experience of a painting as a work of art. Wollheim is well conversant with the philosophical issues while bringing a depth and expertise to the appreciation of the art and craft of painting within both broad historical contexts and the minutiae of a particular artist and this unique painting. So that what he says about any painting becomes a phantasmagoria of informed facts and conjectures that is a marvel approaching Keats' truth, beauty; beauty, truth. Wollheim's interpretations are intrepid corrections of received wisdom and well-argued virtuoso interpretations. His scientist's appreciation of the subtle effects of perception blends well with an informed style; not an easy read, but one likely to educate one's sensibilities anew.

Keynote Book on The Art of Painting
By R. J MOSS
There is a wealth of crunchy cake to digest in Wollheim's, Mellon Lectures, packaged here as, 'The Art of Painting'. If you are at all seduced by the act of painting, whether as a practitioner or as a spectator(painters fill both roles) the arguments and perceptions, so brilliantly and patiently elucidated, will nurture your eye. This is a resource book I've returned to over and again during the last decade, and that's a very high recommendation for any text. The reproductions are thoughtfully laid before us where and when they count against the writing. The insights on Bellini, Manet, and de Kooning in particular I found arresting and novel, pushing the boundaries at all times. The notion of appropriation, so relevant during recent decades, is cogently unravelled. Wollheim writes for,'Modern Painters' magazine and has books on psychology still in print. But this elegant book is the one that most nurtures me. For more on art visit>rodmoss.com

Painting: what sublime Art
By Hiram Gmez Pardo Venezuela
What makes this book so delightful and passionate to read, is the enormous enthusiasm and febrile cogence of the author in order to explain seriously what makes painting an art, a philosopher who has dared to make a real journey around the tradition of the painting in the western hemisphere.

An admirable essay plenty of invaluable, conveying and mesmerizing information that will engage you from start to finish.

Expensive but very comprehensive
By startupsidekick
Technology Ventures is a book that I'll be keeping for a long time. It is a bit expensive (it's a text book, so this is not unexpected), but unlike many other books, you'll probably keep this one.

It covers the basics of launching a business, and it discusses legal issues, marketing, and HR in an engaging format.

Who should read this book:
If you have an academic background in technology, and want to launch a new business, this book will be perfect for you

Who should not read this book:
If you are looking for a quick, light read, this book will be too much for you. Also, if you're looking for information about social media marketing tactics, this book won't really help you

What I like about this book is that it really provides you with everything you need to know about launching a technology company. It covers everything, from the conception stage, to the legal issues. It is taught to Stanford students, and with good reason; its a very good book.

Buy this only if you have to
By Haz
The title says it all - if it is a required book for your class then get it. I got this beginning of 2012 when I finishing my senior year in college. As an electrical engineering major, I referred to my textbooks a great deal. I actually kept most of my textbooks from undergrad (I may be a bit of a hoarder), but not this one. The reason was simple, I didn't find this book to be particularly useful. I took an entrepreneurship course that required this book. This book has very basic econ mixed in with real world examples. It will talk about strategies of a start-up business and then discuss how amazon/google/p&g/etc. do so well. Honestly it is like a blended in version of econ and wikipedia, so not so good.

I feel that most textbooks bought on this site are school related so you have to get it. But if there is a choice, I would go with a different book.

Layout is weird and text is hard to read
By C.N,
Well the layout is a little weird. Not like normal textbooks but it is broken up by main sections then by subsections and I honestly didn't read much more than the 3rd or 4th chapter because of the way it was written. The text is a light blue color which makes it somewhat hard to read for long periods of time. Starts to blend in with the white paper.

The content was dry and nothing I hadn't really learned in marketing or entrepreneurship classes.

EDIT: I guess the 4th edition had black ink. This review is for the 3rd addition.

Critical Assembly: A Technical History of Los Alamos during the Oppenheimer Years, 1943-1945, by Lillian Hoddeson, Paul W. Henriksen, Roge

This volume is a lucid and accurate history of the technical research that led to the first atomic bombs. The authors explore how the "critical assembly" of scientists, engineers, and military personnel at Los Alamos, responding to wartime deadlines, collaborated to create a new approach to large-scale research. The book opens with an introduction laying out major themes. After a synopsis of the prehistory of the bomb project, from the discovery of nuclear fission to the start of the Manhattan Engineer District, and an overview of the early materials program, the book examines the establishment of the Los Alamos Laboratory, the implosion and gun assembly programs, nuclear physics research, chemistry and metallurgy, explosives, uranium and plutonium development, confirmation of spontaneous fission in pile-produced plutonium, the thermonuclear bomb, critical assemblies, the Trinity test, and delivery of the combat weapons.

Review
"This book fulfills its declared intention of providing an unprecedentedly full picture of all the actions and processes that were involved in bringing the bombs into existence." A. P. French, Nature

"Generally the presentation is clear and shows the care one expects of the four distinguished authors....The presentation can easily be followed by a scientific reader, and a non-scientist will get an interesting impression of the events." Rudolf Peierls, Science

"...provides detailed discussion of the many experiments that made up the project, including the implosion and gun assembly programs and the interesting consequences of spontaneous fission in reactor-produced plutonium and continues with details of the Trinity test and the actual dropping of the bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Recommended as an important addition to any college or university library." Choice

"...draw[s] upon a full lode of primary data and explore[s] for the first time the methodology by which researchers at Los Alamos succeeded in their wartime mission. The authors successfully avoid the "official history" pitfall by focusing on individual contributions to scientific and technological advances as opposed to the usual summary of divisional achievements...a well-documented, concise, chronological review of the combination of nuclear physics, chemistry and metallurgy that produced the first fission weapons...also examines the impact of Los Alamos upon the methodology of "big science" at national laboratories in the postwar era." Peter Neushal, Physics Today

"...this is the most technical account of Los Alamos's war years to appear in print...it considers Project Y's significant success in the use of 'big science' methodology....Critical Assembly is a masterful piece of technical writing accomplished by four authors in conjunction with six scientific advisors and editors....essential reading for technically-minded scholars interested in the history of Los Alamos, atomic research, and the development of modern research labs...." Richard Melzer, Western Historical Quarterly

"Critical Assembly has a lot to say about proliferation, much of it relevant to the present. Among other things, it provides a better foundation than ever for evaluating the problems facing countries (or terrorists) with nuclear ambitions." William Sweet, The Sciences

"...an indispensable book...." Barton C. Hacker, American Historical Review

"The book has the great merit of illustrating the depth and breadth of the scientific and technical problems faced by scientists in the laboratory at Los Alamos, New Mexico...This is an important book, for its insight into the enormously complex activities at Los alamos and, even more for its tantalizing survey of the implications of that research and development." Lawrence Badash, Journal of American History

"...the book certainly does bring together a lot of information that fleshes out the story." New Scientist

"...a notable and richly detailed work....Critical assembly sets a new standard for writings on wartime Los Alamos." Canadian Review of American Studies

From the Back Cover
Unlike earlier histories of Los Alamos, this book treats in detail the research and development that led to the implosion and gun weapons; the research in nuclear physics, chemistry, and metallurgy that enabled clear bomb, the 'Super.'

Read Richard Rhodes' "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" First.
By B James
Without doubt, this is the finest account of the technical aspects of the race to produce an atomic weapon at Los Alamos before the end of WWII. As other reviewers have noted, you don't need a degree in physics to read this book; however, you do need endurance.
"Critical Assembly" is a plodding, straightforward, chronological narrative of how talent and materials came together to make a bomb; a techno-nerd's dream. There is no attempt to delve into politics and ethics, make the characters "come alive" with interesting personal glimpses, or place it all in historical perspective. For that you need Richard Rhodes' "The Making of the Atomic Bomb."
Still, the authors did not write "Critical Assembly" to be a riveting historical novel soon to be a blockbuster movie. For technical information, it is the best single book available. To understand why anyone would care how the atomic bomb was made, let alone plod through the technical details, read "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" first.

Critical Assembly - an important reference book
By Peter Staric, PhD
Hoddeson, Henriksen, Meade & Westfal
Critical Assembly, ISBN 0-521-54117-4
Cambridge University Press, 2004

The title of the book has double meaning. It denotes the critical assembly of uranium 235, or plutonium 239 to start the chain reaction in an atomic bomb. But it also points to the critical assembly of numerous scientists, engineers, technicians and US Army personnel. The authors described how in a race with time all these experts were pursuing a single objective: to make an atomic bomb before the Nazi scientists could (supposedly) do it. Each of them was working in his or her special field, but only a handful of the privileged ones knew they were making an atomic bomb. The resolute, competent and mercilessly hard driving conductor of this huge orchestra was General Leslie R. Groves; its concertmaster was the physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. To carry on this parable, the musicians - with rare exceptions - were obliged to play their scores with plugged ears. The conductor allowed them to know only their own score, because the whole composition named MED (Manhattan Engineering District) must not become known before the end of the war.

Though the fission was discovered in Germany (in the winter 1938/39) many Jewish scientists, being suppressed under Nazi-fascist reign, had left Europe as soon as they could. Among them A. Einstein, H. Bethe, R. Peierls, C. Fuchs (unfortunately also a soviet spy), N. Bohr, E. Teller, E. Wiegner, L. Szilard, E. Fermi and J. von Neumann, to name just the most important ones, arrived in the USA, where they contributed essentially to MED. When Groves began leading the project, it started advancing like an avalanche. What in 1939 was deemed to be a science fiction has become a real bomb within just six years.

To quench the thirst for information after the first bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in August 6, 1945, Henry de Wolf Smyth of MED had prepared the book "Atomic Energy for Military Purposes". In it the most basic knowledge of how an atomic bomb works, as well as the enormous effort of MED to make it, was made public. But in its preface Groves attached a latch, telling us this is all, which can be released at the time; take it, do not ask any further questions - or else! Though many books published after this date had disclosed this or that, the book "Critical Assembly" has definitely broken that latch by disclosing many minute details, which were classified almost up to present time. In the book we learned how the scientists and other personnel, forced to work under the circumstances as outlined above, starting with micrograms of highly enriched uranium 235 and (up to then non existent) plutonium, have gradually extended the production up to kilogram quantities, determined the critical masses, avoided the nuclear explosion, and had managed to build two combat-ready weapons, which ended the war. The details will certainly be interesting for physicists as well as for engineers of chemistry, electronics, metallurgy, mechanics, ordnance and some others. For the layman the minute descriptions would be mostly too difficult to understand and the same might be valid even for professionals, if the matter lies too far outside of their specialty. But as a whole, the book is a great work of reference, with an enormous collection of interesting data, not known so far. On top of all this the book has 74 pages of references.

Unfortunately, the Department of Energy was too thorough when removing many "sensitive data" from the original text. Initially numerous details became gradually scarce when the discussion advanced toward August 1945. However, some common sense and simple calculations, based on the data published in many other books, magazines and films, converge to the following conclusions: Approximately 10 lbs (4.53 kg) of plutonium was used in the Fat Man and 70 lbs (31.75 kg) of 88 % enriched uranium 235 in the Little Boy bomb. In the uranium bomb the active material of about 3 critical masses was divided into 4 projectiles and one equilateral cylindrical target, with holes to fit the projectiles, placed inside the massive tungsten steel tamper. When three critical masses are assembled, the chain reaction starts spontaneously within about 0.1 s; so an initiator (with dangerously radioactive polonium 210) is basically not needed. Why was such data not mentioned in the book, which is full of less important details? Today nobody would waste so much precious, highly enriched uranium by not resorting to implosion, which needs less than one critical mass. On the other hand, the metallurgy of plutonium is a science in itself and so is the implosion. So why be so scared?

Technical/Scientific history of the work at Los Alamos
By A Customer
This is a great book if you are a scientist, particularly if you are a physicist. This is a technical history of the Manhattan project at it relates to the work done at Los Alamos Lab leading to the first atomic explosions. You'll learn the fine details of the work as a scientist would recount them. You'll be amazed at the limited knowledge and instrumentation available at the time!!! You'll be surprised by the methods used to get things done in time! And you will be impressed by the
schedules and the accomplishments made in those years of hard -and we are told in details how and why it was hard- work!
If you have worked at a National Lab (and even if you haven't) you'll understand how the concept of the national laboratory came about by understanding the work in the early days of Los Alamos involving a fine interplay between the scientific, the engineering and the programmatic thrusts.
Recommending this book seems like an understatement. If you are a physicist, a chemist, a mathematician, a computer scientist you want to read this book and understand how they did it!
The only thing that could be improved in this book is possibly including a few diagrams. I am not sure whether that is because they might still be classified, but they must exist the archives at Los Alamos. And adding a diagram here and there would certainly be helpful to the reader. If there had to be a revised edition, that's where improvement could find a home.
I'd challenge the team that wrote this book to tackle other successes such as the history of Fermilab or SLAC for example. And not to shy away from a tougher one -not a success story- the history of the failed SSC project. Use some of that insight and record in a similar manner how science, engineering and a really fine mission (not equaled in the latter half of this century) sadly failed that time around...

Yet John insists, "No man has seen God at any time" (John 1:18); and God warned Moses, "You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live!" (Exodus 33:20) A contradiction? How is this possible? To answer these questions, we must look to a unique being called the Angel of the LORD.

Was he Gabriel? No. Michael? Not even close! Vastly more powerful than any rank of angelic being, the Angel of the LORD personally represented God Himself.

But who *was* the Angel of the LORD? What was his identity and why was he unique? Jim Kerwin provides us with a fascinating and thorough Bible study on this powerful and mysterious being from the Old Testament. Along the way, you'll pick up several valuable "tools" for understanding the Old Testament. And you'll come to some surprising insights on how the Bible uses the word "angel." The logical progression of biblical evidence will bring the reader to what may be a surprising answer to the question posed — Who Was the Angel of the LORD?

and I am so glad to have received it
By Shopandsave
This book was a free gift to me, and I am so glad to have received it! Have you ever been confused about who was an angel, a messenger, the Angel of the Lord when you read about them in the Bible? I have. This very clear, readable and engaging discussion not only brings understanding and clarity, but you will gain valuable tools to help understand the Scriptures better. It gets better! The author discloses an exciting link between the Angel of the Lord in the Old Testament and claims of Jesus in the New Testament. I love learning these things. Please give a gift to yourself and add this book to your library. You will be glad you did!!! It is very readable and doesn't take a lot of time, but you will walk away having gained a lot for your effort.

Study on the angel of the Lord
By Mary Cullinane
This is a wonderful study of who is the angel of the Lord. Jim Kerwin goes into a detailed interesting study of the scriptures that refer to the angel and shows clearly who he is. Probably much of the teachings on the road to Emmaus revealed this truth. I highly recommend this booklet to anyone who loves scripture studies.

Landscape Design: A Cultural and Architectural History, by Elizabeth Barlow Rogers

This volume presents a history of the ways in which human beings have shaped the landscape at cult sites, in cities and on great private estates, from prehistoric times to the present, throughout the world. The book considers what the evolution of the design of the landscape reveals about the development of society and culture, examining famous cities, palaces and parks, as well as lesser-known designed landscapes, and even sites now vanished from around the world. Illustrated with hundreds of phtographs, drawings and plans, the book leads the reader through ancient cities, palatial gardens and magnificent sanctuaries. Also covered are: the royal cemeteries of ancient Egypt; the superb temples of ancient Greece and Rome; the magnificent gardens of Renaissance and Baroque Europe and the Far East; the great public parks of the late 19th century; and some of the most exciting avant-garde gardens and earth works of the present day.

From Publishers Weekly
Elizabeth Barlow Rogers, former administrator of New York City's Central Park (The Forests and Wetlands of New York City), begins Landscape Design: A Cultural and Architectural History with stone circles and ziggurats, and traces design's evolution through to today's suburbs and theme parks. An encyclopedic account of man-made landscapes around the world illustrated with a stunning 633 photos and drawings, more than half in color, the book reveals a 1720 English turf ampitheater, the "Tea, Moss and Stones" (as one chapter is titled) of Japanese gardens, the grand genius of Versailles designer Andr‚ Le N“tre, as well as today's "Earthworks, Golf Courses, Philosophical Models, and Poetic Metaphors." It's an accessible and elegant respite.

From Library Journal

Perhaps best known as the founding director of New York's Central Park Conservancy, which oversaw and funded the park's revitalization, Rogers (The Forests and Wetlands of New York City) here presents a comprehensive survey of landscape design. Viewing her subject as the art that modifies and shapes nature, she explores the cultural values that shape, or are embodied in, cities, parks, and gardens. Embracing all cultures and ranging from prehistoric times to the present, this book covers the broadest range of subjects implied by the title, including city planning, landscape architecture, conservation, earthworks, and other uses of land in contemporary art. While this history is international in scope, it does narrow its primary focus to the United States when it reaches the late 20th century. The photographs and especially the plans are excellent and numerous. Single pages or double-page spreads devoted to specific topics add an encyclopedic element while allowing Rogers to provide even more information, illustrations, and plans without interrupting the flow of her very readable text. Accessible to lay readers but of interest to scholars, this book could serve as the text for a comprehensive course on the history of landscape design. Highly recommended. Daniel Starr, Metropolitan Museum of Art Lib., New York

From The New Yorker
This sumptuously illustrated book expands the definition of landscaping from the usual suspects—Versailles, Tivoli, and Central Park—to include, on the one hand, Stonehenge and the Pyramids and, on the other, Disneyland. The result is a comprehensive history of human interaction with the land. Barlow Rogers, a landscape planner, considers that the main shift has been from a sacral idea of place to a conception of "value-neutral" space governed by mathematical principles of perspective. So, while ancient sites reflected pagan cosmologies and animistic beliefs, in Renaissance landscapes the experience of the individual viewer became central. When Petrarch, a keen gardener, explained why he had tried to climb Mont Ventoux, his words were quintessentially those of a Renaissance man: "My only motive was to see what so great an elevation had to offer."

Perfect History book for a visual learner
By Ben Pershouse
This is a great book. It is very readable, and even if you are not particularly interested in landscape design/architectural history, Elizabeth Barlow Rogers will inspire you. This book follows landscape and cultural architecture through history and makes me wonder why all schools - from elementary on up - don't attack history lessons from such a practical and fascinating point of view.

Also, compared with other landscape Arch books this is much less narrow and really weaves in many many threads of cultural and historical interest.

In depth, excellent resource
By Tammy Parker
This book is long and overly verbose, but an excellent resource. As a text in a landscape architecture history class it was a strong foundation.

Landscape Design: A Cultural And Architectural History
By Michael Webb
From Nineveh to a mobile home in Pecos, NM, Rogers casts a wide net, exploring the evolution of formal landscaping in parallel to humans urge to put their mark on the earth. A scholar, who administered New Yorks Central Park for two decades, she provides a compelling account of the cultural roots that underly the plantings, explaining the ideas inherent in unfamiliar and classic gardens. Every page contains sharp insightsfor example, her suggestion that the broken column that the Baron de Monville built as his house at the Desert de Retz outside Paris in the 1780s portended the revolution that would sweep away the civilization he cherished. The abundance of plans and illustrations do ample justice to the text. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

A Student's Review
By A Customer
I'm a 4th year undergraduate student in computer science and I just finished the Design and Analysis of Computer Algorithms course that was based on this book.
I thought the book was horrible. It did little to help me understand anything but general ideas. Reading this book is like reading a volume of mathematical proofs. The authors speak in symbols.
What makes it much worse is that every page makes multiple references to other portions of the text that aren't on the facing pages. They might be one page turn away, but very often they are a few pages, or even chapters away!
The only reason I would keep this book is for the list of topics it covers.

Considerably worse than the second edition.
By G. C. Rhoads
The second edition was arguably the best undergraduate text on algorithms. But unfortunately the 3rd (current) edition is a major disappointment. On the positive side, the coverage of graph algorithms was expanded; on the negative side, is everything else! The explanations are consistently worse than in the second edition. The description and explanation of Quicksort is particularly bad, in fact it's so horrible it should be ripped out of the book and thrown away. About the only use the book now has is as a source of exercises for professors to assign to their students -- fortunately, the exercises are almost entirely the same as in the second edition and are still the best set in any algorithms text.

I have only one thing to say to the author; if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

the result is poor
By B. Etin
This is one of two books I must say sorry to. I hope readers may find my words helpful. I must say this is a poor book, although I feel the authors did put efforts to make it nice.
There are a lot of classical and excellent books on this subject. But here's the reason my department chose it as our textbook: Because the other books are relatively hard and deep for the students.
But here is the response from the studnets at the end of the semester, no matter it is an A student or C student: They hate this book, since they can not get much information after spending hours and hours on it. And they eventually found those "harder" books in lib, and loved them. The key reason is, those books explained everything clearly. (In almost the same number of pages.)
The key problem as I see is, the authors just understood the materials in a certain way, but not thoroughly, and not able to explain it in a clear way. Only a person who has already know all the stuff can figure out what are the authors talking about in some part of the book.
Now I believe, in order to write a good textbook for students, at least you should be a master in this area.
If some of my words hurts, I am sorry. But I am talking about my feeling and most students' feeling.
