"The Portable Jefferson" consists of a vast collection of Jefferson's works. It provides us with valuable insights into his mind and his world.

The longest entry is "Notes on the State of Virginia". It provides a multifaceted assessment of the Virginia known by Jefferson. Politics, the economy, topography, populations, flora and fauna are all included in this report. I read with particular interest the reports on areas of French settlement in what is now Illinois, areas in which my ancestors were living but to which Jefferson had never traveled and about which he had to have learned from the reports of others. Many insights into the Virginia of his day are very interesting.

Jefferson's July, 1774 tome on "A Summary View Of The Rights of British America" give a preview of America's grievances on the eve of the Revolution.

The next segment consists of Jefferson's public papers and addresses. Some are well known, such as the Declaration of Independence, while others are obscure, but often no less interesting.

The last segment of the book consists of many private letters written to a host of correspondents. Some of these are rather mundane matters of personal interest, while others are occasions for expositions of political views and comments on the news of the day. I found particularly interesting his comments on developments in France during its Revolution.

I have long had an interest in Jefferson. This book enables the reader to see him in new and deeper lights. His thought, the breath of his interests and his genius shine on the pages of his book. This is a book to read and then keep handy for reference.

Thomas Jefferson is the most brilliant man in the history of the world, in my humble opinion. I have my degree in Constitutional history and can testify that Jefferson understood the principles of Liberty better than any of the Founders, and better than anyone else whose work I've ever come across. This particular book is one that everyone should own. It's set up well, is easy to maneuver, and has Jefferson's greatest gems all in one package.

Neat book. has a lot of the pertinent documents that Jefferson wrote and correspondences he had with people in his time. I wish there were some more biographical information in it, but it's a great source for primary material.

About the Author
Khristi L. Adams a writer, director and producer and currently resides in Southern California. She recently completed her first short-film documentary called "Chivalry is Dead" where she won Best Directorial Debut of a Documentary at the NY International Film Festival. “Chivalry” was also recognized as Honorable Mention at the Los Angeles Movie Awards and selected for screening at the Charlotte Black Film Festival & The People’s Film Festival. She is currently in production for her next short film "Narrow Road." Khristi is writer and director of the stage plays, “Once Upon a Dream” & “The Herstory Exhibitions” which premiered at Crossroads Theater in New Brunswick, NJ. She also created, “Yesterday I Died,” a play and community initiative that addresses the effects of youth violence on young people working with high school students in Somerset, NJ and Brooklyn, NY. In October 2010, she was featured in "Almighty Debt: A Black in America Special" on CNN highlighting work she’s done with young people in the community. She also works as Associate Campus Pastor at Azusa Pacific University. Prior to working there, she served as Youth Pastor at First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens in Somerset, NJ. She is a graduate of Temple University with a degree in Advertising and a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary where she obtained a Master of Divinity degree. She has done cross-cultural work in Ghana, West Africa; Kingston, Jamaica & Mexico working with churches, schools and community groups.

AWESOME Book!

This book should be required reading for anyone in leadership at a church that has at least one single over the age of 30. There are so many myths out there that are constantly preached at Christian singles and this book addresses them head on. Once someone in leadership becomes aware of these myths and the inherent fallacies of them, they can then make sure that they are not spreading them further.

Having successful marriages is a really big deal in the Christian church. However if the Church was serious about having healthy marriages, they would make sure that singles are dating and marrying for the right reasons. After all, if someone is desperate to hurry up and get married (see the chapter "The Myth of the Deadline") they are not likely to make a wise choice of partner. The Church also needs to accept singles who choose to not get married. They are not being selfish. They are simply choosing to live as a single person and there is nothing wrong with that. After all, both Jesus and Paul were single!

Khristi Adams is profoundly intelligent in her book about singleness. I read this right after a breakup, and it helped me, not only to accept where I am, but to embrace my singleness.
Her voice as a writer helps her to be relatable as she voices her opinion about the benefits of singleness. It's given me so much security in where I am.

Excellent Book!!!

Wow! After waiting *forever* for this next book in the sequel, I devored it in ONE night!! Now how long do I have to wait for the final book?? Ohhhh...the suspense!

This book was excellent! I was completely captivated by Casey and Dillon's plight as they each uncovered incriminating evidence and stumbled into traps and unpredictable danger. It's impossible not to run in their shoes and experience the escalating tension and anxiety as the story unravels...seemingly hopelessly for both of them. But there is hope and redemption woven throughout like a lifeline. It's a riveting suspense book! It also gives us a raw, poignant look into the wounded hearts of those who have been traumatized and are fighting hard to not give up. I fought right alongside of them!

This book can be easily read as a standalone book, but I'd recommend reading If I Run first. I can't wait until the final episode comes out! These are *wonderful* books that I highly recommend!

Breathe

I read the last page and shook my tablet. I scared the cat sleeping on my feet with my sudden gasp of realization that the book was over... then, in agony I read the release date for "If I Live". March 2018. I stopped breathing. How could that happen!? I can't possibly WAIT! WAIT A YEAR!?!
The characters are real with honest issues. I love to see and hear their struggles with simplicity. There's no need to go into deep clinical detail. As a counseling intern I really appreciated the interaction between Dylan and Dr. Coggins. I want to buy a box of these and pass them out. Between the action and gut level honest pain is story at its best. This is another example of why I believe Terri Blackstock is an all-time top writer, not just in the world of Christian fiction. Now someone make the movie...!

For further information, Dr. R. Timothy Kearney has written Caring for Sexually Abused Children. I didn't say if you want it because no one does!

Excellent Sequel!

Casey Cox is still on the run. On the run from a murder charge for which she is completely innocent, Casey continues to use her instincts and ingenuity to out maneuver the corrupt detectives who are pursuing her. Casey knows that her time and money will eventually run out, so she changes cars, locations and identities once again. They almost had her, had it not been for the private investigator who seems to believe her story. The man who let her go.

Dylan Roberts' longtime friend is dead, consequently he was hired by the Pace family to find Brent's killer. He just never expected the assignment to involve a ring of criminal secrets spanning years of extortion within his local police department. The information that Casey Cox reluctantly sent him was viable, just not strong enough to be considered evidence in a court of law. They need more time and more concrete facts to cut off the heads of the serpents who have framed her for murder. Casey has disappeared off the radar again. Will he find her in time?

Could Terri Blackstock possibly fashion a sequel that would rival the first book in this series, you might ask? Absolutely! Amidst many tribulations, he uncovers a trail of corruption and intrigue that ultimately leads him to suspect a member of a royal family. Replete with convincing details, the setting's time and place provide lively and diverting passages; the plot, however, twists only occasionally before its fairly predictable, politically rooted resolution. Rowland crafts a competent mystery her first time out, shows sure command of her background material and demonstrates that she is a writer of depth and potential.

His repeated weighing of the samurai code of loyalty and duty versus the pursuit of justice slows the plot occasionally, but not seriously. The descriptions of the lives of townspeople, samurai, the privileged class, and inhabitants of the "pleasure district" in 17th-century Edo (Tokyo) are brutal, but rich and sensual, especially the Tea Ceremony and New Year celebrations. As a newly appointed yoriki (senior police commander), Sano Ichiro is expected to obey his superior's order to treat the deaths of an upper-class woman and a commoner as a shinju (ritual double suicide). Sano believes the two were murdered and doggedly continues to investigate, risking his job and his life. He gradually uncovers a plot against the shogun himself. The best part of this first novel is the splendid evocation of late 17th-century Edo. The descriptions of the stratified society, the details of everyday life, and the sights and sounds of the city that will later become Tokyo are vivid and compelling. Readers intrigued with unusual settings for their mysteries will enjoy this work. Others may not be able to ignore the paper-thin characterizations and the coincidence-strewn plot. The last paragraph leaves an opening for a sequel. Only large pop fiction collections need consider.

A Great Historical Detective Story

This book was recommended to me by a friend, and now I am hooked! 'Shinju' is a mystery about a supposed ritual double lovers' suicide (the title is the term that is used to refer to that act) that is in actuality a murder. Ichiro Sano, a young man recently appointed 'yoriki'(policeman) is assigned to a cursory investigation of what most of his colleagues and superiors view as a dishonorable and distasteful incident. Sano's takes his duties seriously, however, and almost loses his life -- and more importantly -- his honor in uncovering both a disturbing crime and a treasonous plot. Set against the backdrop of the Tokugawa Shogunate, this novel is educational as well as entertaining, and I really didn't know where the plot would take me as I read; the hero gets in some pretty dangerous situations. Rowland really paints a realistic picture of Japan in the 17th Century, with its dependence on personal obligation and honor. It's both frustrating and eye-opening for the reader to discover that although the hero knows 'whodunnit', his society prohibits him from bringing the guilty party (or in this case 'parties') to justice.

Fascinating history, mediocre writing & puzzle

Rowland is great at making 17th century Japan seem real, and goes into exquisite detail about the material (and, more crassly, moral) circumstances in which her characters live. That alone made the book worth reading, and made me interested in reading Bundori as a follow-up. However, Shinju has serious drawbacks. Anyone who reads mysteries regularly will have no trouble solving Shinju by halfway through the book. The main problem, though, is Rowland's ponderous writing. Her action scenes and urban descriptions are great; but anything about characters' thoughts and motivations gets wordy and dull very fast. Instead of letting readers figure out why characters respond as they do (except for the highly-scrutable inscrutable suspects) she beats to death the possibilities with lists of questions the characters are supposed to have flashing through their minds. In addition, no one moves a muscle in this story without Rowland reporting on its flexion. It's as if she do! ! esn't trust the readers to be as smart as she is. That's annoying. Shinju is a lovely historical tapestry, and compelling as a result. Frankly, I think Rowland should drop the mystery element (which is profoundly unsatisfying) and just write novels of 17th Century Japan. They would probably be great.

Interesting Setting, Less Compelling Mystery

A highly detailed series debut set in Tokyo (Edo) circa 1690. The detective is a newly appointed samurai police officer who quickly manages to piss off his boss and underlings by sticking his naively inquisitive nose into various matters, most notably, a ritual lovers' suicide he is ordered not to investigate. Of course our hero has an inner conflict which rages between duty and justice which battles most of the book, as he gets himself deeper and deeper in hot water. The mystery itself is nothing special, and relies on a villain who is more than slightly crazed. The fun in the book is in all the little details about urban Japanese life and customs of the era, as well as the political background. This is presented very fluidly and is well-woven into the plot.

About the Author
Rowland S. Miller is a Professor of Psychology at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. He has been teaching a course in Close Relationships for over 25 years, and he won the 2008 Teaching Award from the International Association for Relationship Research (primarily as a result of this book). He is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, and a winner of the Edwin Newman Award for Excellence in Research from Psi Chi and the American Psychological Association.

Insightful & Interesting

Generally, textbooks are dry affairs that one puts down once class is over. For Intimate Relationships, however, I found myself reading the material independent of class study; I honestly found it that interesting. The material is often directly applicable and you cannot help compare the research and examples to your own relationships.

The genre, which includes literature, films, television shows, and several types of digital media, has evolved, says Mills, as each new generation questions its own identity and embraces the thrill of “automobility” (autonomy and mobility) thus providing audiences a means to consider radically altered notions of independence, even as the genre cycles between innovation and commodification.

This cultural history reveals the unique qualities of road stories and follows the evolution from the Beats’ postwar literary adventures to today’s postmodern reality television shows. Tracing the road story as it moves to both LeRoi Jones’s critique of the Beats’ romanticization of blacks as well as to the mainstream in the 1960s with CBS’s Route 66, Mills also documents the rebel subcultures of novelist Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, who used film and LSD as inspiration on a cross-country bus trip, and she examines the sexualization of male mobility and biker mythology in the films Scorpio Rising, The Wild Angels, and Easy Rider. Mills addresses how the filmmakers of the 1970s—Coppola, Scorsese, and Bogdanovich—flourished in New Hollywood with road films that reflected mainstream audiences and how feminists Joan Didion and Betty Friedan subsequently critiqued them. A new generation of women and minority storytellers gain clout and bring genre remapping to the national consciousness, Mills explains, as the road story evolves from such novels as Song of Solomon to films like Thelma and Louise and television’s Road Rules 2.

The Road Story and the Rebel, which includes twenty illustrations, effectively explores the cultural significance of sixty years of rebellion in film, literature, television, and digital media. Spanning media platforms and marginalized communities, the text offers new interpretations of canonical works and reintroduces forgotten works, revealing the genre to be more political and philosophical than previously understood.

Katie Mills is a visiting assistant professor in the Department of English Writing at Occidental College in Los Angeles. She has published essays on the Beat generation and the alternative youth culture in a number of journals and books.�

Boring, unoriginal book

This book is an awful excuse for research. Very little original thought was put into the creation of this book. It looks like Katie Mills wrote this to receive her PhD, and now is forcing her students to buy this drivel. It's kind of sad.

About the Author
After teaching English literature and composition for several years at Concordia University in Montreal, Ruth Sullivan received her LL.B. and B.C.L. from McGill University. She completed the Legislative Drafting Program at the University of Ottawa and clerked for Chief Justice Laskin at the Supreme Court of Canada. After completing her Bar exams, and a Masters in Legislation from the University of Ottawa, she joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa in 1984. Her primary interests are administrative law, statutory interpretation, linguistics, legal drafting, and legal theory. She has worked in the Legislation Section and the Regulations Section of the Department of Justice and directed the Graduate Program in Legislation and Legal Drafting. She has taught drafting and interpretation in Kuala Lumpur, Kiev, Rome, and Ottawa.

I don't know how this book has escaped WER review for so long. Its main theme is an exploration of how most natural systems seem to behave; they make things up as they go along. Author Erich Jantsch shows the commonalities in the way in which seemingly different systems organize themselves and change over time, and the picture which emerges is entrancing. Whether discussing simple inorganic chemical processes or the complexities of cultural revolution, Jantsch's unifying vision restores to nature the self-directedness and spontaneity which science has denied it since the seventeenth century. While the book is, of necessity, a reconnaissance, it paints the most expansive and generous view of nature I have come across. I have a friend who set aside a winter to read this book properly.

Monument to foresight of author and short-sight of publisher

I first encountered this book while researching my dissertation on chaos/complexity/systems theories and their implications for clinical psychology (It was only due to the marvelous holdings of the University of Pennsylvania library that I was able to find it at all...I'll get back to that). It wasn't long before I realized that I had stumbled across a staggeringly important volume. The scope of the late Professor Jantsch's vision on subjects ranging from biology and chemistry to cosmology and earth science was (IS!) breathtaking. Long before anyone outside of circumscribed and as-yet unconnected circles had ever mentioned the words "Chaos" or "Dynamical Systems" theory, Jantsch was lucidly and adroitly anticipating some of the most advanced implications of this unborn paradigm. As a friend and colleague of the great Ilya Prigogine, this is perhaps not so surprising in retrospect. However, his encapsulation of self-organization and self-similarity is still, in my opinion, one of the more mature and comprehensive treatments on the subjects to date! His incorporation of the theories of evolution (seen as both a "micro" and a "macro-" level process) brought it all together in a way which joins and integrates disciplines like neurons link brain and body. All the more reason why I am appalled that this book is so completely out of circulation that my last out-of-print search turned up one volume (after several months), at a cost of over $200US! It is unconscionable that this pivotal work is inaccessible to students, scientists, and instructors, at a time when Jantsch's ideas are so relevant to this increasingly interconnected, evolving global civilization. The closest thing we have is Teillhard de Chardin...and Jantsch does it without the teleological, eschatological baggage which Chardin could not, in the end, escape. It is true that many of the specific ideas in this book are out-of-date (hence 4 stars rather than 5). However, he hits far more often than he misses, and we are all the poorer for inaccessibility of his work. A note to any publishers out there: I personally photocopied the entire book, a move of dubious legality but lamentable necessity. I would VERY gladly replace my yellowing stack of Xeroxes with a duly purchased copy, if given the chance. If your interests lie anywhere in the realms which I have (woefully superficially) mentioned, then it is worth your while to go WAY out of your way to read this book. Pardon the hyperbole and the soap-box.

Why is this out of print?

This book and Chaitin's "The Limits of Mathematics" should be printed in softcover and distributed at supermarkets. This is perhaps one of the most important books of the 20th century, simply because Jantsch has managed to finally put a very large amount of information (just the reading list is worth the price of the book) in one place. Thermodynamics, cybernetics, mathematics, computing, physics...they've all been saying the same thing for years now and for some reason we irrationally ignore the message: the TRUTH is not to be found in a formal system based on anything resembling the Aristotelian logic we of the Western world love so dearly...And the deeper we wallow in our mythical constructions the more likely we won't be around for very long.
This is not a "lite" book; perhaps that is why the copy I have (an inspection copy from a major university) has only been taken out seven times since 1980! Pathetic considering the current hand-waving taking place in AI (particularly the work of Dennett and the Churchlands) and the philosophy of mind. The only other place to find the overview is in Leduc's IEEE paper "Human Knowledge: can the planet survive human rationality?". Perlovsky's work in cybernetics is also an excellent place to see similar results.
It is unfortunate this is out of print; perhaps you can find a copy in a library. Better yet, start bugging the publisher to reprint it.

One of the most important achievements of 20th century..

For me, this book is the thing that changed my view upon the universe. Before this book, I was a critical reductionist with a mechanistic view. I am too short of English to express what this book was for me :) but the only thing I can tell you is that if there were only one book that I could have in my life, this book would be that one.. I can't estimate the value of this, surely one of the most important achievements of 20th century..

A Good Sequel - Well Thought Out and Executed

Just when I thought Stroud had outdone himself with the Bartimaeus series, especially books 3 and 4, here comes a great new series from him - Lockwood & Co. After The Screaming Staircase, The Whispering Skull doesn't disappoint. Thrills, chills, turns and twists galore.
We meet the steadily more famous Lockwood team, each showing the familiarity, as well as steady character development over the previous book, and through the current book. Intertwining the whispering skull from the last book with an intricate plot in this book, alongwith the co-opetition with Fittes Agency, and also DEPRAC, it makes a strong, cohesive plotline - never once boring or losing track.
All in all, a worth recommend to all lovers of fantasy - and looking forward to the next part of the series!

Fast-paced, Creepy, Brilliant! (even if you're an adult!)

Have you ever walked into a bookstore and bought a book you’ve never heard of by an author you’ve never come across, purely on the strength of a recommendation from the staff? That’s how I came across the first Lockwood & Co. book (The Screaming Staircase) – and I am so glad I did. I LOVED it so was over the moon to be sent the second instalment to review.

Imagine a cross between a teenage, modern day London-based Ghostbusters (without the cheese) and Harry Potter and you’ll have a vague idea of just how great these books are. They are marketed as YA but are just as much fun for adults.

The three main characters – Lockwood, Lucy and George make up the Lockwood ‘Ghost busting’ Agency. They provide a familiar (in a Harry Potter-esque way) dynamic which is full of humour and completely works. I like them all, from the dashing, ‘never breaks a sweat’ Anthony Lockwood, to the completely kickass, gutsy Lucy Carlyle (who I suspect fancies Lockwood just a little) to the rather unattractive but studious, clever and ever curious George Cubbins. They all have their strengths – both psychic and otherwise. Lockwood’s strength is Sight – he can see ghostly disturbances and manifestations before the other two. Lucy’s ‘Talent’ is in detecting aural phenomena and George specialises in the research of cases; trawling through dusty old manuscripts, visiting old libraries and archives as well as doing a considerable amount of tea-making and baking.

In the first book we followed Lucy through a series of interviews until she was ultimately hired by Lockwood and the three of them got into (and out of) all sorts of trouble. In this instalment, a year on and the three of them still live in Lockwood’s big old family home (not an adult in sight), getting into (and out of) all sorts of trouble.

In this world, only children and teenagers are sensitive enough to psychic phenomena to deal with ‘The Problem’ (the ‘ghostly epidemic that besets us’) and so are hired by agencies in order to find, and eradicate the source of their power. All of this is (supposedly) regulated by DEPRAC (Department of Psychical Research and Control), which is based at Scotland Yard and which I think of as the Lockwood version of a kind of Ministry of Magic.

This time around, the trouble involves a ‘whispering skull’ (in a jar, which communicates with scathing sarcasm and seriously winds up Lucy), lots of catacomb / churchyard / coffin based action, deadly artefacts that have been stolen and need to be found, lost manuscripts written in dead languages and of course, a fair smattering of pretty terrifying ghosts and spectres. There are rapiers, magnesium flares and salt bombs; spiders, rats and desiccated corpses. What’s not to like?

The story is creepy, fast paced and full of action - it absolutely gallops along with the action nicely interspersed with brief homely scenes usually involving copious amounts of tea, sandwiches and cake (baked by George of course).

Further intrigue (as well as lots of humour) is created by the presence of rival agency members – mainly those of the original, (in)famous Fittes Agency, ‘where psychic detection had been raised to an art-form’, particularly Quill Kipps (who we met in the first book). As Lucy tells us: 'Being diplomatic, I’d say Kipps was a slightly built young man in his early twenties, with close-cut reddish hair and a narrow, freckled face. Being undiplomatic (but more precise), I’d say he’s a pint-sized, pug-nosed, carrot-topped inadequate with a chip the size of Big Ben on his weedy shoulder. A sneer on legs. A malevolent buffoon. He’s too old to be any good with ghosts, but that doesn’t stop him wearing the blingiest rapier you’ll ever see, weighed down to the pommel with cheap paste jewels. Anyway, where was I? Kipps. He loathes Lockwood & Co. big time’.

I loved it just as much as the first book. The ending is brilliantly satisfying and sets things up wonderfully for Lockwood #3…
