Eric Foner is the preeminent historian of his generation, highly respected by historians of every stripe―whether they specialize in political history or social history. His books have won the top awards in the profession, and he has been president of both major history organizations: the American Historical Association and the Organization of American Historians. He has worked on every detail of Give Me Liberty!, which displays all of his trademark strengths as a scholar, teacher, and writer. A specialist on the Civil War/Reconstruction period, he regularly teaches the nineteenth-century survey at Columbia University, where he is DeWitt Clinton Professor of History. In 2011, Foner's The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery won the Pulitzer Prize in History, the Bancroft Prize, and the Lincoln Prize.

Interesting Perspective on American History

The perspective that Give Me Liberty presents to its readers is predominantly one of the voice of the under represented or disenfranchised in the history of the United States. Professor Foner makes a concerted effort to convey how the average citizen experienced the history occurring around them and casts them as players in that drama.

What I have found surprising though is that for an academic text, Give Me Liberty often lacks objectivity to the point where Professor Foner blatantly injects his own subjective opinion into the text. It isn't even that he is giving examples of the thinking of others which would reflect his thesis; he just comes right out and tells you what he thinks. An example of this can be found on page 656, in the section which discusses "The New Imperialism." Foner writes, "... eventually, they would be accorded the right to self-government, although no one could be sure how long this would take. In the meantime, 'empire' was another word for 'exploitation.'"

While I may agree with this sentiment, I was under the impression that an academic text, especially one intended for a college-level audience, should, as objectively as practical, present the facts and allow the student to exercise their critical-thinking ability to consider the evidence and draw their own conclusions to the material presented.

Another minor issues I have with the the text is that Professor Foner has a tendency of using unattributed or anonymous quotations. An example of this is "... one historian has written,...." Well, if it is one historian, who was it? I can understand if he is making a generalization of how a large group of people felt about a topic, but if it is just one person, can't you attribute the quote to them? I don't necessarily expect footnoted references, but at least say who the person is.

Even with the issues that I have presented, I have given Give Me Liberty a four-star rating because of the fact that this text has caused me to look at American history from a much different perspective than that which was presented in other American history classes or as portrayed in popular culture. If you are open to the ideas presented, it will definitely give you a fresh perspective into what the American Experience has been for the majority of the people who have experienced it.

Great Undergrad Text

I am taking two courses of American history at my community college. This book is the one that my history professor chose for the class. It is a solid treatment of the history of the United States focused around the advancement of liberty. It does not take steps to ensure a level of detail in the major wars like the Civil War or Revolution. Instead, it directs the student's attention towards events which set the stage for oppression, racism, sexism, and other discriminations. From the removal of the natives to the growing issue of slavery in the United States, Foner carefully outlines how the meaning of the word 'liberty' means different things to different cultures, and how it has changed over time. The unique qualities of American liberty are thoroughly treated. This makes the textbook flow with ease; students can easily see a growing pattern emerge in Foner's work. True to his background, Foner gives an extremely lucid presentation that set the stage for the Civil War, and the route to segregation afterwards.

My only complaint is that it does not cover the wars as thoroughly as I wished. However, this book is good enough that I will be keeping it after my two courses are done. If anyone has a friend who's interested in American history, this is the book to get them.

Focus on Freedom

If you're reading this, you probably don't have a choice on whether or not you want to buy this book. So let me give you a couple reasons why you should actually read this:

+The focus of this book isn't just on telling the story of how we came to be, it focuses on freedom and how our notion of freedom has changed through the ages

+SO well written. Reads similar to a novel and is easy to follow along with.

+Glossy, lay-flat design makes it perfect for highlighting and reading. The quality of the book is superb.

+Did I mention this was well written? I'm halfway through the semester and have actually read all 5 chapters so far. It's an amazing book with an amazing author

+Doesn't simply tell the story. You probably already know how Christopher Columbus was a terrible man. This instead has little to say about Columbus, even less to say about the Pilgrims. It's truthful to what our history as Americans is. Over 80% of the people who landed in Jamestown died in the first year from harsh conditions. We were so desperate that we stole food from Powhatan.

+Truly tells the story of how rough things were for the colonists. Absolutely real and not sugar coated like most high-school or college books. Foner tells it as it was!

Good for what it is, but perhaps not what you really want

These books are valuable in giving you a slice of Jane's work, but as a source for information on the ships themselves, there are better alternatives. Foremost among the faults I'd cite in these Janes compilations are that they are contemporary accounts from a single national source-- meaning that the particulars for the speeds, armor, and capabilities of a good many ships are foggy or incorrect owing to the lack of proper information from potential enemies who did not care to advertise the precise specifications of their ships. Another issue is that the content comes not from a single edition of Janes annual catalog, but from a smattering of editions that spanned the era. The edition from which each ship's section is culled is not spelled out, so you are denied the ability to understand perhaps how reliable you may wish to regard each profile. However, owning Janes material has its own value, in that this is the Farmers' Almanac of the subject, and sometimes the weather forecast in an old Almanac is not as valuable as possession of the edition.
For a better source for this information, I would recommend Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships, 1906-1921. You will probably have to use a bookfinding service for this, but you will not be dissatisfied if you can procure a copy. It features much more information on each ship, and in many cases provides valuable context that cannot readily be seen through endless tables of horsepower, armor, and the like. For instance, in many cases the specifications may not be false per se, but carry with them a host of caveats that defy a tabular form, and Conway's gives these to you. to paraphrase, e.g.: "This class was intended to be much the same as the preceding class, aiming solely to reduce per unit cost and fatten the fleet." or "The new Mark XI guns these ships carried had a longer range than the preceding Mark X weapons, but their higher velocity came at a cost of greatly reduced accuracy at common ranges and was seen in retrospect as a failed design." That type of contextual overview is what any source like this needs to be a truly reliable document. While it cannot thereby tell you EVERYTHING, it creates in each reader a sense that numbers lie, and that sometimes looking to sources for comparative analysis is an essential companion to having a table of figures that purports to capture the ship.

A good Book

I found Jane's Fighting Ships of World War I to be a great reference book that goes along with Jane's Fighting Ships of WWII. The book includes all navies that were in WWI (too many to list). All pictures are black & white. The only color picture is the dust jacket. For each Navy, the book lists or shows the ranks that are availible, the flags used, location of naval bases, etc. Usually, there is only one picture (if one is available)of each ship. If you are a WWII buff, you will need this book to go along with the Jane's Fighting Ships of World War Two.

An authoritative review of the Navies of 49 countries.

“Jane's” is probably the world's leading byword when it comes to information about ships especially, though not exclusively, ships of the world's navies. In this special edition of those warships which existed during WW1 we are treated to the full specifications of each vessel complete with the same information with regards to its machinery and armament.

Each section (Navy) commences with waterline silhouette profiles of the entire fleet followed by individual classes of ships from biggest to smallest. For the vast majority of entries we have a detailed profile and deck view of each class of ship with all parts numbered and named. Additionally, in most cases the publishers have been able to include at least one photograph (often more than one) of each type of ship. However, the publishers do point out that some of these pictures are of an inferior quality but are included in the interests of completeness because no other pictures are available.

Various engineering and gunnery notes are also found in addition to more general information explaining the specific differences between various ships of the same class.

Altogether, typical 5 star material from an established publisher of high quality material.

Hal Leonard has great books, this being one of them

Ya know, I think I'm hooked on Hal Leonard books. Their instructional books just superb. This book. .. a definite keeper. I would call it intermediate more so than beginner. Definitely have to know how to read and play. Buy it. If you're advanced you'll still have fun. If you're a beginner you will have a few songs you can play or at least a great book as a goal. Or play the melody right hand. . Plenty of songs to choose from for that.

A great piano solos book - beautiful music

I consider this Piano book one of the best I have ever played. I am an advanced pianist who hasn't played in 30 years, but I add chords as I go along. It tends to be a little easier than an intermediate or advanced song book, but it is well worth purchasing and adds hours of enjoyment to play all the piano solos.

Mark Powell is author of four novels, most recently The Sheltering. He has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Breadloaf and Sewanee Writers' Conferences, and in 2014 was a Fulbright Fellow to Slovakia. Nice story, but bilingual version could be better

The story is simple and the artwork is lovely, but the way the words are set in the bilingual version is confusing. On the cover, the English is red and the Spanish is purple, but inside that is not the case. The two fonts are very similar, and the Spanish is all over the place. They couldn't make room for the second set of sentences, so they just stuck the Spanish wherever and however they could fit it on each page. It's not enjoyable to read with words all over the place.

Beautiful pictures, nice story (if you only read it in English. Why did the Spanish translation have to be SO different in both meaning and rhythm? I hope the person who wrote the Spanish understands 1) this is not a literal translation, 2) this is not a rhythm and rhyme translation, and 3) just because an author trusts you to translate does not give you artistic license to CHANGE the author's story.

I can't speak to the quality of the Spanish since I am not a fluent/native speaker....We love this book, the lap sized version lends itself to reading to multiple kids and they are intrigued by the artwork.

This is a Movie Script, not a Book

I didn't preview enough of this book to realize that it's more of a move script. I thought I was reading a book. I did not enjoy reading the script as it was very distracting to read the director's prompts for each setting and the character's reaction. I'd much rather see the movie than read a movie script!

A cheesy book

I don't know what I expected this book to be like. I suppose the title should have warned me of its tone - it varies between farcical and ridiculous.....a cat leading Cass to an important clue, a body preserved in a barrel of rum, Amanda la-ti-da about Cass' visits to the "boarding house", the cheese hidden in a creek, all this interspersed in the unnecessarily-complicated plot. I think I expected it to be tongue-in-cheek. I did not expect to strangle on it. It doesn't help that the narrative is told by two different persons, the reader left to determine which person is speaking. I would not recommend it.

A highly entertaining historical spoof

Mr. Giesser out does himself in the historically based Cheese of Some Importance. A well-known playwright and producer, Mr. Giesser is renown for his dry sense of humor and wildly witty repartee. Who else could have imagined such a bizarre tale involving the abduction of an absurdly large cheese -- that seems to hold the prospect of undoing the Union? I snickered my way through the many surprising twists and turns of the novel all the way to the last tantalizing revelation. Mr. Giesser's colorful descriptions and sassy dialog not only paint a vivid picture of the life and thinking of the time, but set the stage (no pun intended) for a thoroughly entertaining tale of conspiracy, patriotism, propriety (or lack thereof) and murder.

Hijinks, Snappy Repartee and Mayhem in Washington D.C., circa 1815

So, take a dapper, clever, slightly bemused young man and pair him with a bright young English widow with a penchant for tossing off vaguely salacious double entendres and what do you have. Steed and Mrs. Peel from the original "Avengers"? Yes. But now place those two in the humid, swampy backwater that is the U.S. Capital in 1815. Put them in search of a stolen 1,250 pound wheel of cheese, (the theft of which could give rise to a political scandal mighty enough to fracture the fledgling U.S. of A.). If you were to do such a thing you would get this entertaining book.

We start a bit slowly, as our hero narrator, Cassius Lightner, appears to enjoy taking the long way around when it comes to telling a story. The pace freshens when we realize that alternate chapters will be related by Mrs. Amanda Crofton, who is a much more witty, incisive and blunt teller of tales. Between the story itself, the cross-talk between the two leads, the amusing differences in their recountings of the same events, and the rich collection of supporting characters, this qualifies as an entertaining romp.

Odd as it may sound, this book appears to qualify as an "historical mystery". Our Nick and Nora Charles heroes follow the clues, discover the occasional body, and unwind a conspiracy even as they toss off bon mots. Amazingly, the 1815 District of Columbia setting works. The author captures the feel of a great capital city rising from the swamp and the muddy lanes. The era was loaded with fascinating political figures, and they flit through the story. The author has mixed together a modern sensibility and a vaguely old-fashioned writing and speaking style in order to capture the period without wearying the reader, and I felt that it worked.

So, an interesting mystery, an amusing couple, a well developed historical feel, snappy dialogue and a few chuckles. I can't ask for much more than that.
