Just OK for rme
By S Walker
It was hard for me to finish reading this book. The characters were not captivating to me. The Archangel Rafael was not a true Alpha Hero, if he could go about doing something the wrong way, he did. The other Archanagels did not grab me enough to even want to read their stories. The heroine was just whiny and annoying to me. An about to be divorced 38 year old, who is every sterotype of the jilted women with bad self esteem. Two teenagers, who are "every" bad stereotype of teeangers, and she just sighs and keeps saying how busy she is. She says it evey 5 minutes. I'm just so busy, i'm so tired, I just cant do another thing, but does nto seem to have the scheduel to back that up. Oh and lets not forget the soon to be ex husband, who again is every sterotype of the mid lilfe crisis having man. It was not until about Chapter 10 that Rafe did his job and told her what she was becoming and what that entailed.

Delightfully enticed by Archangel Rafe
By Kindle Customer
I purchased this book on Amazon, after first reading the sample, which enticed me to hit that 'buy in one click' button. I am quite happy I did. I haven't had such an engrossing and entertaining read, particularly one that at times pulled at my heart strings, in quite some time.

Angelina doesn't have time for Angel stuff...especially not for an Archangel popping straight from her dreams and into her real life. With an ailing grandmother, two teanagers, and a cheating ex-husband whom she's still in the process of divorcing, who can blame her? Such a workload is more than enough for any one, without adding in mystical healing powers on top of it. Rafe is tired of the human world...as a healer, all of the violence and distruction rampant is more than enough to make even an Archangel question the efectiveness of his job.

As they fight their forbidden attraction to each other, and begin to care for each other, Rafe's faith in humanity begins to be restored....and Angelina learns that it's ok to take a little me time, and to like, even possibly enjoy, facing her destiny, despite the forgotten dangers that have begun to resurface from ages past.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, and can't wait to read more about the seven.

Awesome Book
By Amazon Customer
This is a absolute must read for all the PARANORMAL ROMANCE readers out there. This book kept me glued to my kindle until the last page was finished. In fact this will stay in my keep file as I wait for future books from Lisa. I certainly hope there will be more especially about Uri and Nora.
There are not many books out there that combine real life with humor, and a touch of mystery. You have an Archangel and a plain divorced mother with two kids, an ailing Grandmom with the needy sister. So for her there is not enough time in the day to do it all. So Raphael enters her dreams and the attraction is instant on both sides. She finds out from him she has this amazing gift to heal people. Raphael is also not terribly fond of humans plus it is forbidden with grave consequences for them to have a relationship. I loved how Lisa managed that part, it was a surprising ending. Raphael gave her a reason to enjoy life again with joy and she gave him acceptance and willingness to fight for their love. I have read many PR books so this angle was new to me. I hope to see plenty more by this author. It was fresh and had a well thought out storyline.

Mayakovsky's Revolver: Poems, by Matthew Dickman

From a dazzling, award-winning young poet, a collection that paints life as a celebration in the dark.

At the center of Mayakovsky’s Revolver is the suicide of Matthew Dickman’s older brother. “Known for poems of universality of feeling, expressive lyricism of reflection, and heartrending allure” (Major Jackson), Dickman is a powerful poet whose new collection explores how to persevere in the wake of grief.

from “Mayakovsky’s Revolver”

I keep thinking about the way
blackberries will make the mouth
of an eight year old look like he’s a ghost
that’s been shot in the face. In the dark I can see
my older brother walking through the tall brush
of his brain. I can see him standing
in the lobby of the hotel,
alone, crying along with the ice machine.

From Booklist
Though Dickman, whose first collection, All-American Poem (2008), received the May Sarton Award from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, lives in Portland, Oregon, he belongs to the New York School of Poetry. He is not as completely immersed in the quotidian as Frank O’Hara, and his lines lack O’Hara’s tensile strength, but Dickman’s tone is similar, as is the ambition to evoke but not to capture, and his poems progress at the speed of sensation. Dickman is so committed to his method of digression that all but one poem are similar in length, style, and tone. “The Madness of King George” introduces a second voice, a woman in a bar sitting next to the poet, and the different cadence of speech is astonishing because Dickman’s primary voice is so distinctive. Dickman is a curious hybrid; a sophisticate inclined to pose as a naf, he cannot escape the grief that threatens to overwhelm this book. --Michael Autrey

Promising idea, doesn't get there
By Jon Corelis
The book seems to be an attempt to stake out new poetic space by writing a type of now traditional personal, confessional poetry in an updated beat/hip/postmodern style, all set within the generally neglected (in poetry at least) white working class milieu. The recurring motif is the death of an older brother, alternating with memories of other losses and loves. The approach is a promising one, and the emotions expressed are clearly sincere, but for me, the book just doesn't work well as poetry: the style in general strikes me as prosy (though vigorous and clear prose -- maybe the book would have been more effectively cast as a short novel), the metaphors strained rather than startling, and most of the individual poems failing to achieve the unified arc of imagery and emotion I expect from a successful poem. I also thought that not much attention was paid to the very rich and strong traditional rhetorical strategies of formal elegy in English language poetry -- if you miss that, you miss a lot. The book has been well reviewed elsewhere and some will like it -- if you're thinking of buying it, a glance at one of two pages of the amazon preview will let you know quickly if you are one of them. But or me, it doesn't get there.

Masterpiece in modern poetry
By AlisonKathleen
This is an emotionally taxing collection. In fact, it took me much longer to read than anticipated because I felt that reading it all in one sitting would do it and me a great disservice. However, I've walked away feeling as though I've learned something greater, something deeper. I've found a new friend. I've found a hand to hold in the dark. I'm in love with a book.

Portraits of grief, guilt, and love.
By JeremiahANDKaye
Matthew Dickman's work really caught me off guard. I came across one of his poems while scrolling through instagram of all things. Believe it or not there are a lot of excellent poets lurking around on that app. I'm a pretty avid reader but I've never consistently read poetry. I've come across poems that really got my attention but never found a poet who's complete works kept my interest. Poetry is tough because there is so much of it and it's not easily segregated by genre or categorized by someone who is not familiar with it in a technical sense. It can be really tough to find the style that appeals to you. Something about Matthew Dickman's work caught my attention immediately and kept it throughout this book. The prose feels loose at first but as you read on you realize just how carefully measured it is and that Dickman really is a master of his craft. This book contains portraits of grief but also guilt, shame, and love. The work is introspective in a way that is intensely personal. There were moments where I felt like the author himself had let me in too close, revealed too much of the inner workings of his brain to me and I was grateful for it. His portraits of guilt are incredibly effective. Whether its the story of him and his brother torturing their sister with a dead goldfish or the story about the time he offended someone by telling a joke about "sexy kids" and the guilt he felt afterward. His analysis of himself is so honest and even masochistic that it's hard not to be effected by it. I read this book slow. I took it all in little by little. While I finished it months ago at this point I still pull it out from time to time just to experience my favorite moments over again.

Non-Governmental Organizations in Contemporary China: Paving the Way to Civil Society? (Routledge Contemporary China Series), by Qiusha Ma

Based on documentary materials including interviews with key players in China, this book charts the development of non-governmental and non-profit organizations in China from the late 1970s to the present day.It recounts how in the aftermath of the 1978 reforms that created a market economy and diversified interests and social life, new institutions and organizations outside of the state system increased dramatically in number, size and influence. These organizations, which barely existed before the reforms began in the late 1970s, carry out many social, economic and cultural tasks neglected by the government.

Qiusha Maexamines two key questions crucial to understanding the development of NGOs in China: First, is it possible under China’s one-party state for non-governmental organizations to thrive and play important economic, social and political functions? And secondly, are NGOs facilitating the formation of a civil society in China?

IPv6 Fundamentals: A Straightforward Approach to Understanding IPv6, by Rick Graziani

To support future business continuity, growth, and innovation, organizations must transition to IPv6, the next generation protocol for defining how computers communicate over networks. IPv6 Fundamentals provides a thorough yet easy-to-understand introduction to the new knowledge and skills network professionals and students need to deploy and manage IPv6 networks.

Leading networking instructor Rick Graziani explains all the basics simply and clearly, one step at a time, providing all the details you’ll need to succeed. Building on this introductory coverage, he then introduces more powerful techniques that involve multiple protocols and processes and provides hands-on resources you can rely on for years to come.

You’ll begin by learning why IPv6 is necessary, how it was created, and how it works. Next, Graziani thoroughly introduces IPv6 addressing, configuration options, and routing protocols, including RIPng, EIGRP for IPv6, and OSPFv3. You’ll learn how to integrate IPv6 with IPv4, enabling both protocols to coexist smoothly as you move towards full reliance on IPv6.

Throughout, Graziani presents all the IOS command syntax you’ll need, offering specific examples, diagrams, and Cisco-focused IPv6 configuration tips. You’ll also find links to Cisco white papers and official IPv6 RFCs that support an even deeper understanding.

Rick Graziani teaches computer science and computer networking courses at Cabrillo College. He has worked and taught in the computer networking and IT field for nearly 30 years, and currently consults for Cisco and other leading clients. Graziani’s recent Cisco Networking Academy Conference presentation on IPv6 Fundamentals and Routing drew a standing audience and the largest virtual audience for any session at the event. He previously worked for companies including Santa Cruz Operation, Tandem Computers, and Lockheed.

Graziani provides straightforward understanding.
By M.B. Reynolds
The title of the book is an accurate depiction of the contents of this work. The material is presented in a straightforward, methodical manner. The material is presented with understanding and teaching in mind utilizing repetition, sample code, examples, and review. The book is primarily a walk through the various Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Requests for Comments (RFC) that comprises the aspects, features, and options of IPv6. Most of these RFC walkthroughs are accompanied with Cisco IOS example code for setting up a router to implement the RFC. After some of these examples, output from a packet sniffer demonstrates the changes to the packet headers. The book finishes with mechanisms for implementing mixed IPv4 and IPv6 environments and approaches to transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6. Additional references and notes point the reader to more details or topics not covered by the book. Overall I certainly recommend this book as a starting point into IPv6 if the reader has some IPv4 and routing experience. I believe for the novice an additional more general book on networking should be digested first.

The book covers the Internet history and the motivation of IPv6. The IPv6 headers and Extension headers are presented in (again) a straightforward explanation with plenty of diagrams and tables. This explanation includes the specific differences between IPv4 and IPv6 headers. A nice overview of IPSec headers includes authentication, transport, and tunneling modes.

One of the most substantial changes from IPv4 to IPv6 is the addresses and their types. After introducing hexadecimal and the address format short hands, Graziani explains well the structure of the new 128-bit address: prefix, subnet, and interface id. Chapter four outlines the multitude of unicast, multicast, and anycast address types. The Neighborhood Discovery Protocol is a new feature of Internet Control Message Protocol version 6 (ICMPv6). Graziani shows ICMPv6 with its enhancements is an important change in how IP hosts identify themselves and others hosts and routers on the network.

The middle of the book discusses IPv6 configuration and routing. Initially, a router is configured from scratch with the various address types. The same example configuration and network is nicely used through the middle of the book. This method is useful for continuity and context. Building on this initial configuration static routes and routing tables are built. The old and new RIPng, EIGRP, and OSPF are compared and contrasted in Chapter 8. The middle ends with Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol version 6 (DHCPv6). The new features such as stateless & stateful DHCP and relay agents are covered. Some interesting differences in Domain Name Service (DNS), TCP, and UDP are explained.

The book ends with mixed IPv4 and IPv6 environments. Graziani shows dual stack allows for parallel IPv4 and IPv6 networks. He covers tunneling methods such as 6to4 and ISATAP that allow for IPv6 packets to be encapsulated in IPv4 packets and routed through an IPv4 network. He shows this allows for a smooth transition from IPv4. Finally Network Address Translation IPv6 to IPv4 (NAT64) is walked through. He shows this allows and IPv4 address to be mapped to a IPv6 address and vice versa to allow coexisting IPv4 and IPv6 networks to communicate.

After trying others - THIS is THE BOOK!
By John Scott
The review written by Cosmic Traveler says it well. I purchased 2 other books before this one and they both ended up on the bottom shelf of my bookshelf. I ordered this one and I couldn't put it down. If the mere thought of a 128-bit address represented in hexadecimal format makes your hair stand up, you need to order this book and then go have a glass of wine - or a cold beer.

one
Stepping into the Circle
THE GODDESS IS ALIVE AND well in Texas.
Her sacred grove is a one-bedroom apartment on the
East Side, where the traffic noise rattles the windows and
rain leaks in through the crack above the door. In the age
of computers and stock portfolios, She has traded Her celestial
raiment for a business suit. The Hands that spun the
web of creation chop vegetables, light incense, type letters.
The Voice that called the stars into being answers the hotline
at the domestic violence shelter downtown. The Goddess
sings Aretha Franklin in the shower at night, and
sometimes She forgets who She is.
Then She looks in the mirror and sees the light of the
Sacred in Her eyes. She remembers dancing bare-breasted
at Beltane and standing with arms upraised in the center
of a ring of oaks with chant ringing in Her ears as She
weighs dragon’s blood resin at the local metaphysical supply
store. She thinks of the praise that falls from Her lips
on a moonlit night. She remembers Herself.
So can you.
By now you have read books on Wicca, searched the Internet
like a big-game hunter on safari, and networked until you
couldn’t tell one Amber or Raven from another. You’ve bought
specially charged candles and been to festivals; you’ve memorized
lists of correspondences for colors, days of the week, elements,
astrological signs, herbs, deities, and animals. Maybe
you have been part of a coven or other sort of group, maybe
not. You have certainly gathered quite a collection of ritual
robes, jewelry, and tubes of henna paste.
The problem, however, is not with whom you have worked
or what you have worn. The problem is that you look in the
mirror and you still don’t remember who you are. Life feels
heavy, and the rituals you attend have started to bore you.
There is something fundamental that’s missing from your
religion, and you hate to admit it. After all, when you found
Wicca, it felt so much like coming home. Does your dissatisfaction
mean you’re in the wrong house after all this time?
Before you start to pack, consider this: humans are a
species constantly in search. At the beginning of our history
we searched for food, and when we realized that potential
food was much bigger than we were, we searched for a big
stick to hit it with. We searched for shelter, and then when
the basic issues of survival were covered, we searched for
community so we wouldn’t have to face the dark nights
alone. Once we learned to band together and share the labor,
we had time to search for something bigger: meaning, purpose,
something to explain why we are here and why we
share our existence with disagreeable things like murder,
flood, politicians, and mosquitoes. We needed something to
give us a place in the universe―a vantage point from which
things made sense.
Religion of any kind is a way to find that something. It
became clear to the human race that the meaning of life―
the purpose of it all―would not be the same for every person.
Hence the rise of so many religions and philosophies.
Every faith approaches the search in a different way and
finds a different idea to focus on. Christians, most often, seek
salvation from our own sinful natures and deliverance from
the evils of the world. Put very simply, Buddhists seek
enlightenment―a transcendence of the physical realm in
order to pursue the spiritual one. Wiccans, along with a number
of others, seek union.
Someone once asked me, “What’s the point of this Wicca
thing? I mean, if you’re not trying to get into Heaven or find
Nirvana, what are you trying to do?”
That is a tough one, and a question I don’t think many of
us have given a lot of thought to. It is difficult to step back
and look at the bigger picture. I gave the only answer I knew,
then or now. The point of Wicca, the real mystery behind it
all, is to remember the Divinity within ourselves and all
things; to manifest our God and Goddess all the time, every
day, every moment; to love as They love, to give as They give;
to serve Them in perfect trust, and thus bring Their grace
more fully into the world; to understand that we are the
embodiment of the Divine love and nurture, and to express
that love in the world; to walk as God and Goddess.
Sound impossible? It isn’t. We already have all the tools we
need; we only have to recognize them and teach ourselves
how to use them to return to a view of the world where anything
is possible―to see like a child with wide eyes and an
open heart.
The rituals and other tools of Wicca serve as a bridge
between ourselves and that goal, and as tools they can be
used effectively or clumsily. I can’t count the number of rituals
I have attended where the most spiritual part of the event
was the potluck afterward when everyone shook off the
boredom of another full moon just like the hundred before it
and really got to celebrate. The most moving rituals are the
ones with the fewest stage directions and the least fuss,
where energy flows along its natural currents and we dance
with it. Unfortunately these are in the minority for most
groups, and in solo Wicca it can be even harder to create a
sense of the sacred when using the same old chants and the
same old colored candles. We try not to venture too far from
what we’ve learned from books and covenmeets, since
branching out means that eventually our branches will intersect
with those of other religions. Wiccans have great pride,
I have noticed, in how different we are from the world’s
biggest sects. Perhaps we think it shows growth on our part,
or perhaps we simply want to distance ourselves from the
ways of our youth that often left us scarred and wanting. We
forget the moments of fellowship, the hymns that were part
of our blood, the parts of ourselves that those faiths actually
did satisfy even if we grew beyond them and went searching
for something more.
The problem is that in our desire to separate ourselves
from our childhood faiths and eke out a place of our own in
the grand scheme of things, we refuse to learn from our religious
heritage. Obviously if the Christians do it, it must be
useless. Never mind the millions of people who do find the
Christian tradition a fulfilling path. Never mind the people
out there who are striving to be Christlike―not political, who
are not our enemies. We can’t learn anything from them, of
course. Everything we need as Wiccans is in a book somewhere
or in ourselves or in the natural world, right?
The vast majority of our co-religionists nowadays have read
all the books on beginning Wicca they can stomach and don’t
live anywhere near the natural world that our ancestors had to
struggle with for daily survival. It’s difficult to revere nature
with any sense of reality when the nearest natural area is thirty
miles away and the closest thing to it is a manufactured park
littered with beer cans and stray drug dealers. We spend all day
encased in metal and glass, going from house to car to office
and back again, and many even work through meals.
Where does that leave us? We are in many ways disconnected
from the nature we are supposed to worship. If having
a ritual outdoors means schlepping into the country with a
ten-pound bag of ritual tools (the mystical Tote Bag of Shadows)
and soaking ourselves in bug repellant, what do we do
the other three hundred or so days of the year? In our society
we are constantly bombarded with images of violence, hatred,
and indifference, and our attempts to change things are often
met with hostility. The magic in the world sometimes seems
to have a precarious hold on life at best. How can you live as a
7
Wiccan every day when your lifestyle is better suited to urban
guerilla warfare?
It isn’t enough to be a Wiccan on full moons or sabbats.
No one ever became fluent in a new language by using it
once a month. The best way is to surround yourself with the
lesson; to speak Wiccan from dawn to dusk until it becomes
your nature.
One oft-overlooked remedy for our modern dilemma is
the ancient tradition of a daily personal practice. In every
religion the world over there are people who take the devotional
path, giving over large parts of their day to ritual,
prayer, and communion with whatever face God wears for
them. The dictionary definition of the word devotion is to give
wholeheartedly to something. Given the Wiccan view of the
universe as a place of cause and effect, it would follow that
the more you devote to your sense of the Divine, the more
the Divine will devote to you. If our goal as Wiccans is to
turn our belief in the God and Goddess into reality, immersing
ourselves in our relationship with Them is the surest way
to turn our belief into knowledge.
How do I know this? My life is every bit as hectic and the
city I live in every bit as toxic as most people’s. I haven’t
reached some blissful state of spiritual perfection, but I have
seen its nearest neighbor in people I have encountered over
the years, and I have begun to learn from their success.
The first group I noticed whose religion and life were as
one were Catholic nuns who worked in the hospital where I
was a secretary at the age of twenty-two. There were several
elderly Sisters who tended to the patients’ spiritual needs,
and in a building full of trauma and pain they were always
calm, gracious, and quick to smile. They moved with quiet
surety through the halls, their voices gentle and almost
musical. Speaking to any of the Sisters gave my spirits a lift,
which was vital given how much I hated the job.
I had to wonder, though, what got them through? They saw
the worst of humanity in an endless parade of communicable
diseases and gunshot wounds, yet maintained their sense of
grace. I had to know if they could still smile when they got
home at night, or if it took all their strength just to stay human
in such a place.
Finally I asked one of the nuns how she dealt with such a
stressful workplace. She smiled at me rather beatifically and
told me that when she got up in the morning she prayed.
At breakfast, lunch, and dinner she prayed. At bedtime she
prayed, and a dozen other moments in between, keeping in
constant, loving dialogue with God. The nuns didn’t just
believe the tenets of their faith, they lived them from morning
till night.
I couldn’t help but be impressed, as well as feel a little
sheepish. I had tried for a long time to tell myself that there
was nothing that I could learn from Christians; that their
narrow-mindedness was the reason the world was going to
their hell in a handbasket. In other words, I’d been as narrow
as I thought they were. It was what some of my Pagan contemporaries
call a “cosmic two-by-four”―a whop in the head
from the gods when you’ve been an idiot.
The idea of daily practice, however, stuck with me long
after I had taken the lesson of tolerance to heart. I started to
ask around among my Pagan friends, finding out to my chagrin
that, for the most part, they were bereft of any sort of
personal daily rituals beyond a few minutes of meditation.
Life was simply too busy, they said, to do half the things they
wanted to to stay in touch with the God and Goddess.
That led me to wonder whether a life too busy for our
deepest beliefs is really much of a life at all.
After hunting down a number of books on the monastic
life, I discovered that in the arena of personal practice, the
humble monks and nuns had us beat. Naturally it’s easier to
devote your entire life to God if you live in an abbey, where
the environment exists to support your religious quest. Yet
despite the inherent differences between monastic and lay
lives, there are valuable lessons to be found from these little
communities, regardless of creed or location.
Buddhist monks―and, indeed, a great number of Buddhists
in the larger world―have similar practices to the
Catholics. They move in a rhythm of mindfulness and meditation
throughout the day, even using housework as an opportunity
to meditate on the wonder of the present moment. To a
Buddhist, every action is a chance to learn and grow spiritually.
As a result, the Buddhist reaches a state of emotional
equilibrium where stress and angst have only a fleeting place
in the course of the day.
The Sufi dervishes, who practice a form of Islamic mysticism,
integrate their prayer and liturgy with dance, music,
and the well-known “whirling” that helps the practitioner
reach Allah. The poet Rumi, credited with founding Sufism
as a sect, frequently referred to God as “the Beloved.”

Meanwhile, Westerners run around with cellular phones
plastered to their heads shrieking at each other in traffic and
having heart attacks on an alarmingly regular basis.
Hmm.
Even among laypeople, Christians and Jews appear to
have an easier time integrating their spiritual lives with their
daily ones, perhaps because so many people have given it so
much thought. Those who want to become more spiritually
attuned in mainstream religions have dozens of resources at
their fingertips.
Take, for example, the recent “What Would Jesus Do?” phenomenon.
It may seem like more of a marketing ploy than a
religious precept, but if you look past the merchandise and
into a less cynical view, it is an excellent way to integrate faith
and the mundane world. Taken at face value it is a profound
question. How would a deity act in this situation? What would
he say? Are my own actions following my religious ideal?
Books abound on Christian and Jewish daily prayer; there
are plenty of devotionals, calendars, and classes on living a
prayerful life. In this way, Pagans are at a decided disadvantage.
Perhaps we simply haven’t given it enough thought. We
learn from the outset that we are not separate from Deity,
that the whole world is God and Goddess, but what do we do
with that belief? How does that belief translate into direct
experience in day-to-day life?
I have known a handful of Wiccans who managed to
develop an integrated magical/mundane existence, and the
effect is amazing. These are the truly powerful Wiccans, the
ones whose every word resonates with Divinity. Their lives
11
run more smoothly, more peacefully, and when disaster
strikes, it seems to flow through them like water. The source?
Daily practice, a devotional life.
Why don’t more people live that way? The first cry is, “I
don’t have time! I have to get to my meeting and take the
kids to soccer practice and answer my e-mail and get that
proposal ready for Monday and clean the bathroom and wash
the car and figure out what to have for dinner!”
You’d rather be doing all that than a ritual?
As a society, we have given time the power of a god. The
clock is our idol and we bow to its whims, always running a
little behind like the terrible sinners we are. How many
minutes of the day can the average person give up without
compromise? Very few, but the truth is, there is no such
thing as a spiritual life without sacrifice. In the olden days
perhaps it was part of the harvest or an animal (or even a
member of the tribe in extreme cases) that went to the gods
to show them how much they were loved and respected
(and, in some cases, feared). In our time, the sacrifice must
be time. We are always called by the gods to give up what we
think is precious. In our day, we crave an extra two or three
hours even though we waste large amounts of the extant
twenty-four trying to climb the corporate ladder. Meanwhile,
our inner lives languish. To find peace in the valley of
the shadow, it’s worth getting up twenty minutes earlier.
Trust me on this one.
I find it a bit novel, and rather laughable, that a lot of Wiccans
(especially the young) want their religion to serve them
as quickly and efficiently as possible with a minimum of per-

Packed with great ideas...
By Keslynn
This is not yet another Wicca 101 book. Instead, this book focuses on helping Wiccans to fill their lives with their spirituality rather than just being Wiccan for sabbats and esbats. For a relatively small book, this one is packed with great ideas on how to deepen your Wiccan/pagan spiritual practice. Added to that, the tips are actually solid practical things that anyone can do, nothing airy-fairy or impossibly complicated. In fact, I felt that many of the points were fairly obvious, but these are definitely things that need to be pointed out. For example, she suggests that the reader go out into nature (in whatever form it's available) and attune to his/her local environment. Seems pretty evident for a nature-based religion, but it's easy to forget to commune with nature and deity when you're working full time and juggling a jillion other things too.
Another thing I found very useful was the section of 3 things to think about at the end of each chapter. Mostly, these are questions that relate to personal practice and make you think about things you can do to integrate it into your daily life and make it more meaningful. I like that she didn't just spout out information and leave you hanging; she gives you the beginning steps to help you digest and use the concepts.
Finally, at the end of the book is "The Book of Moonlight" which contains some prayers and rituals to jump start you into daily practice. The prayers and invocations are beautifully written and useful.
Dianne Sylvan is not at all pompous and doesn't pretend to be the ultimate authority. She writes with humor and practicality, and best of all, she wants the reader to not get stuck on her words alone. Several times, she tells the reader to adjust her material to suit their own lives and spirituality. This is a very nice and refreshing change from the endless slew of Wicca 101 books. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be a Wiccan, even while at work, school, etc.

Fills a void in Wiccan literature
By A Customer
I've never written a review for Amazon.com, but had to do one for this book. I came across Dianne's website some time ago & was intrigued with her way of looking at Wicca. When I found out she'd published a book, I tracked it down & was even more profoundly moved by her observations. This is a woman who will make you THINK.
There are many books I've read about Witchcraft & Wicca. Plenty of info on tools, quarter calls, the gods/goddesses, etc. But I found something missing in most of them.
The most basic, essential thing of all: relationship with the Divine & how it affects your life on a very basic level.
There were times during this book where I had to stop & say, "YES! YES!" Cheers for Ms. Sylvan for having the heart & drive to write this book & get it out to the public.
Also, I have to say that the litergy in this book is some of the most beautiful I have ever read. The chapter titled "The Book of Moonlight" is going to be used often in my practices.

Wonderful read
By Dionne Ruff-Sloan
Ms. Sylvan has written a very personable, enjoyable book. It is a great resource for pagans who are looking to develop a more personal relationship with the Divine. I loved the "Things to think on" at the end of each chapter in which she ask some questions pertaining to how you felt about the information covered in the chapter. I think this would be a great book for covens (or solitaries) to use for discussion and Part 2 "The Book of Moonlight" containing daily prayers and rituals has inspired me to create my own "book of moonlight". I have begun to incorporate several of her suggestions (morning and evening devotionals) into my daily life and I must say that I have really made a difference to me.

Amazon.com Review
Dorling Kindersly publishing is known for their beautiful and informative books, covering a huge range of topics, including science and nature. This DK insect handbook's lush photos and thorough information make it an excellent beginning resource for the insectophile. While not comprehensive enough to replace an entomology handbook, and not specific enough to be a perfect field guide, Insects rests comfortably in the handbook territory. Its sturdy binding and quick reference features make it a natural to take along on family outings. Each page is lavished with full-color photo layouts showing close-up detail of major insect and arachnid groups, and the accompanying text provides basic information on life cycles, ranges, special habits and features, and trivia. The author, George C. McGavin, is a respected entomologist specializing in insect ecology. For quick identification of major bugs and arachnids, as well as tips on how to observe terrestrial arthropods in nature, this handbook can't be beat. --Therese Littleton

A great overview of insects
By A Customer
This book has a lot of useful information about insects. It describes basic characteristics, life cycle, and much more. It also includes info on other terrestrial arthropods, such as spiders and centipedes. As a field guide, it focuses on families of insects, not species, which makes more sense because there are so many species that are hard to identify. There are great photographs and descritions as well.

Great guide--teach yourself to identify most insect families
By Ms. WB
This is really a nicely done guide and almost fits in my coat pocket. The pictures are fabulous and the insects are divided up into their respective families with very clear identifying traits. I'm really impressed, so much easy-to-use information in such a small book. This would be a great precursor to an entomology class. Some of my favorite critters are in the Psuedoscorpion order and are the cheliferids and chernetids, both of which look like tiny ticks with claws. So very cool. I actually found one once in Washington state--in my kitchen! It was very, very tiny. I digress. A book like this is handy if you are always finding insects and wondering what the heck you are looking at. A good value!

Mixed Feelings
By Gloops
Mixed feelings about this handbook. It gives an excellent introduction to an enormous subject, and provides a manageable overview using Linnaean taxonomy (family tree), within its 250 pages. Its illustrations are clear and detailed and in glorious colour. Many of the bugs are absolutely beautiful.

However, it recognises its own limitations by saying "... impossible to include [all 1500 families of terrestrial arthropods] in this book. We have chosen a broad range from around the world, including [those that] are particularly important, common or simply fascinating in some way".

As a result, if you really need something to identify the creatures in the area where you live, then this handbook won't get you very far. For example, the entire world's Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) are dealt with in 20 pages and the Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) in only 5. Compare this with, say, the 84 and 21 pages respectively (out of a total of 320) in Bob Gibbons' "Field Guide to Insects of Britain and Northern Europe", which I found to be of much more practical use, simply because its scope is geographically far less ambitious. The Gibbons book won't help US readers, I know, but the comparison is likely to be true for any good quality LOCAL field guide.

The DK/Smithsonian production is attractive and eye-catching, and could very well spark a youngster's interest in the subject, but it is probably more suited to the coffee table than to the field and the garden.
